Clayton Observations Panther's unlikely to select Cam

Um our owner said that we would take Luck if he declared. That should tell you we are not happy with Pickles. As much as every outlet wants newton to go to buffalo we will more then likely take him if he checks out. Buff will get Gabbert.

yep. and then they hired a new HC and every time he speaks he continously brings up finding a franchise QB.

most teams that are grooming a young guy to be THE guy speak differently. Rivera than backtracks and points to his roster as a possibility but w/ the way he talks it doesn't seem like there is a lot of faith in those guys turning into franchise QBs who can operate his offense.

I never heard him say that.I think it safe to assume he would have but I never heard him say we are going to draft Luck.

Drafting a QB this season would be a total waste of a draft pick. Cam Newton nor any other QB in the draft is worth a top 5 pic.

We may and we may not have our QB already on the roster. There is no real way to tell from last season what so ever. You cannot take a rookie QB with rookie WR's and expect the passing game to intimidate anyone under the panthers old system.

If anyone truly knows how Fox's offense runs, the passing game worked off the success of the running game. With that being said the opposing Defense blitz a lot and worked against the run almost all season.

Clausen also did not play very well his first season and ND. But once he learn the system (which was an NFL offensive system) he played very well. Then there’s pike. I have a feeling that pike may be even a better QB than Jimmy. He could have gone a 1st round pike if he stayed school for one more season.

Now you would think that this would open up the passing game more. But look at the fact that most of the season we had 2 rookies out there running poor routes and not getting off the man to man coverage or getting off the jam at the line of scrimmage hurt the passing game.

We need to get at the minimum a veteran QB to come in and take over to give Clausen and Pike time to learn the system and improve.

Would love to see a trade for Palmer, he’s up there in age but would be a good fit for the vertical passing game the new OC wants to implement.

Oh and Fox was never issue about drafting questionable players or signing questionable players. It’s always been Richardson. Ever since the issues with Kerry Collins and Rae Carruth, Richardson refuses to draft or sign players with a questionable back ground. And I for one respect him for that. I wish every team owner would follow his lead regarding this. Players like Pacman Jones and his like should not be allowed to have the privilege to play a game for a living.

Credibility lost.

Our owner never said we'd take Luck publicly, that was leaked out so he knew he would go #1 because people in the media were all "NAH HE STILL WONT GO #1, THEY WONT PAY HIM AND LOVE CLAUSEN" (...and look what we get now XD)

However, just because you want Luck and see him as an upgrade does not mean any quarterback in the draft would be an upgrade, or Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert would be a bigger upgrade over the other positions we could pick up.

Speaking of Clayton, just now on SportsCenter Todd McShay said that if Cam passes all the "intangible tests" that he could go as high as number one, or fall as far as 10 if he doesn't. Clayton, whom was sitting right beside him, then says that Cam could actually go as high as 3, but not number 1, because A) Buddy Nix is in love with Cam and B) we are looking for our Julius Peppers.

Newton could start week 1 and be an upgrade over Clausen.

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
