Clayton Observations Panther's unlikely to select Cam

Newton is either going to be a homerun....or a complete strike out.

The risk is just too high for the potential reward.

I still say there is no way we take Cam. So, all of the nuthuggers better get ready to start bitching....because it is going to happen.

MadHatter: I stand beside you. A franchise QB is defintitely worth the risk, but Cam is a DEVELOPMENTAL QB. He will take 2 years to prepare and will struggle for a year. If he succeeds, it will probably be in year 4. That is the year Cam and Dad will enter negotiations for a mega deal. We will have wasted 3 years for 1 year and then have to pay a ton to keep him. That is the best case scenario. ICONS are very expensive, people!

Worst case scenario: We sign him to a $52 million, 4 year deal. He becomes nothing more than he is now and busts. Nuthuggers rush to their computers to change their avatars and usernames so they can bitch about Newton and demand that we draft a FRANCHISE QB.

I disagree with Clayton. The Panthers are not happy with JC, they simply want to make sure that his suckage was not merely a product of his environment. I think he needs to be rewired and the offense healed. That may or may not work.

However, to jump to the conclusion that Newton is messiah is silly. Newton just gives the staff a completely different set of problems until he shows that he can mentally function at the NFL level. When I see him look to the sideline after lining up in the spread to get the pre-snap reads, I wonder....

The length of time it will take for newton to be NFL ready is going to rest on the CBA more than Newton's college experience. If there is a extended lockout, he won't get sufficient practice to be a factor this year. So the 2 year prediction would be a factor. On the other hand he is reported by his personal coach to pick things up very quickly and has a very good work ethic. Plus his athleticism and strong arm will mean that he can make plays guys like Clausen can't. As a result he can make mistakes or miss some reads and still produce for the offense.

This high bust potential is overrated unless your measuring stick is one year. For a team willing to develop him, there is every chance he will succeed and much less he will bust. Guys over the past decade who have been busts have either had attitude and effort issues or been a product of inconsistent or poor coaching. If Scherer were still here I would be concerned about developing anyone. But with Shula I think the liklihood that Newton would significantly improve is pretty good.

The things you can't coach like athleticism, leadership, work effort, desire to excel and win, etc. Newton has in spades. The things he lacks are frankly very teachable and are the reason that quarterback coaches exist.

As for the 52 millon 4 year deal speculation, until there is a CBA or a rookie cap, that is just overblown and baseless speculation. But that seems to be the basis of most of the Newton predujice and fear right now.

I'm also not sure a new coaching staff wants to continue to wait and cross their fingers that the light will come on for Jimmy.

There is a reason Rivera addressed this position specifically before he accepted the job.

It takes any QB @ 2-3 years to adjust to the NFL. If he waits until next year or the years after to address the QB position he understands he might not be around to enjoy the fruits of his labor. He wants to get his guy in here sooner rather than later.

Now he has to make a determination whether Cam is that guy or not. He isn't going to get him just for the sake of getting him (nor should he). He is going to get him if he feels he can be that franchise QB. I have a lot of faith in him in making that determination.

Contrary to what you guys think, I trust these guys to make a good decision and if they don't think Cam can be the guy I am cool with that.

But to hear you guys trash this kid is a little over the top. And he isn't as risky as some of you guys pretend that he is. That is why I defend him all the time. He is a legitimate #1 overall pick contender. And a lot of people that are better equipped to make these decisions agree with that assessment. That is why at least six teams have him #1 overall on the big board. These teams aren't just stupid. They know what they are doing and how to evaluate.

It just comes down to whether the Panthers are one of those teams.

But can he be the guy?? That is for Hurney and Rivera to figure out. I think he can.

Then do a liitle research on Auburn's system and get back with me. The system is a hurry up offense which is similar to a 2 minute drill. It isn't a read and react system and doesn't work on the principle of the read the defense. It is an attacking system which relies on misdirection and forcing defenses to react to them. The quarterback has reads but they often key off the DE not the safeties as in a pro style offense. The play is called in by the sidelines while the team is at the line of scrimmage to keep defenses from substituting and the desire is to run the play within 10 to 15 seconds of the ball being placed by the referee. There are plays based on down or distance but they don't do much pre-snap reading at all. In fact the intent is snap the play before the defense is fully set.

Whether that sets Newton back or not is your opinion to decide but the offense was not your typical spread or a pro-style offense.

But to your point there will be chalk talks and time to determine his football IQ before the draft. Clubs will know whether he has the aptitude to pick up an NFl offense before the draft. Given the offense he played in and the fact he was there 1 year, deciding whether he can read defenses based on his time at Auburn give incomplete information at best.

Drafting a QB this season would be a total waste of a draft pick. Cam Newton nor any other QB in the draft is worth a top 5 pic.

We may and we may not have our QB already on the roster. There is no real way to tell from last season what so ever. You cannot take a rookie QB with rookie WR's and expect the passing game to intimidate anyone under the panthers old system.

If anyone truly knows how Fox's offense runs, the passing game worked off the success of the running game. With that being said the opposing Defense blitz a lot and worked against the run almost all season.

Clausen also did not play very well his first season and ND. But once he learn the system (which was an NFL offensive system) he played very well. Then there’s pike. I have a feeling that pike may be even a better QB than Jimmy. He could have gone a 1st round pike if he stayed school for one more season.

Now you would think that this would open up the passing game more. But look at the fact that most of the season we had 2 rookies out there running poor routes and not getting off the man to man coverage or getting off the jam at the line of scrimmage hurt the passing game.

We need to get at the minimum a veteran QB to come in and take over to give Clausen and Pike time to learn the system and improve.

Would love to see a trade for Palmer, he’s up there in age but would be a good fit for the vertical passing game the new OC wants to implement.

Oh and Fox was never issue about drafting questionable players or signing questionable players. It’s always been Richardson. Ever since the issues with Kerry Collins and Rae Carruth, Richardson refuses to draft or sign players with a questionable back ground. And I for one respect him for that. I wish every team owner would follow his lead regarding this. Players like Pacman Jones and his like should not be allowed to have the privilege to play a game for a living.

I just don't buy this theory that the Panthers want other teams to think they like Newton just in case they can get somebody to trade up for him. If somebody is willing to do what it takes to trade up to #1, it will be because they like the player and have done their own research. These GM's and coaches are not as dumb as fans think they are.

I guess we really thnk clausen is a franchise Quarterback...sigh...

The front office bluntly said the moment they got the #1 spot Andrew Luck would be a Panther. Ever since Rivera got the job all he has stressed over and over and over....is they need to find a franchise QB.

None of that screams them loving Clausen or that they have confidence in him being the guy.....if they thought he was they guy they would say it. Most teams w/ a QB they are grooming clearly say that.

Because if you can convince 3-4 different teams that we want their guy, you have a better chance of making a trade with somebody. I don't know if the interest is genuine or not, but I totally believe that Hurney loves throwing up smokescreens like this. I could rattle of a list of several players that the front office expressed a great deal of interest for and never took when they were available with our pick.

Good point. We may be in a better position to trade down than many think.7 of of top 10 teams need a QB.The 2nd reason is the potential for a rookie salary cap.The third is the lack of qbs in FA and do you want a FA that may not see a play book until later this summer if the CBA talks fail.It really depends on if the teams feel if Newton or Gabbert can be there franchise qb,if so it would be worth trading up and giving up a 2nd round pick.

I think the panthers will have to sign a FA qb no matter what they do in the draft coupled with the need for additional picks.

No they are not but this is a tactic that every team uses year after year. It makes some team jump up the baords to trade for the player that want or need the most. I would not be surprise to see Carolina trade down in the draft for more picks which may be the best thing for them to do.

we have no second round pick so trade down for a lower 1st and a second round pick.

Well it's pretty much a worthless tactic when you have the #1 pick. Nobody is trading up to #1 for a player that they don't already like and haven't researched heavily on their own, just because the Panthers are saying that they might draft him. It's just not happening, unless they are completely incompetent.
