Panthers Bringing in Newton for Visit

Marty Hurney and John Fox took LenDale White out to dinner just to talk privately to him...then drafted DeAngelo Williams.

Getting excited over pre-draft talk and shenanigans is kind of like getting hyped listening to your sister tell you about the blind date she set you up with.

It was probably the private talks with LenDale White, amongst other things, as to why they went ahead and picked Williams. I would think before you draft anybody in the 1st round you are going to want to talk with and meet them personally prior. For all we know, if Lendale's private talks went differently he might have been the pick.

I like it, why wouldn't you want to explore all avenues? I have to admit Cam is big, and if he has the intelligence to go with it he could be nasty. Still for the #1 overall it's concerning. Even more so is that with this type of move the Panthers will have to be looking for vet QBs, he has no one to learn from. I still want to see Clausen some more he deserves a valid season, last season was not, and especially not for a rookie.

The Panthers will be looking for a vet QB no matter what.

He doesn't really need a veteran signal caller to learn from. His quarterback coach Mike Shula was an NFL quarterback and has a great pedigree. The idea of a veteran in my book is to come in and play if he is capable not hold a clipboard. With our history of injuries that veteran is only 1 or 2 plays from being the starter.

Clausen isn't going anywhere. He has a 4 year deal and is cheap. Right now we couldn't trade him for a ham sandwich. He is going to be here because no one else wants him and he has no trade value.

He isn't going anywhere today......doesn't mean he is gonna hang around for 4 yrs. New HC's always turnover the QB roster from prior staffs. Doesn't do anyone any good to hang on to a QB who doesn't fit your scheme and isn't really good......just b/c he is cheap.

they didn't take him because they saw how much of a punk he is and could probably tell that his work ethic and attitude sucked. probably needed that dinner to confirm ideas that they had about him.

i don't doubt that he was a serious prospect for them, because many did, but once they started investigating teams fell out of love with the idea of him and for a good reason.

i seriously doubt that newton is going to do anything but impress in interviews and conversations.

I think they will be impressed with his physical work ethic at the combine. They want an extensive look at his mental work ethic. If he is able to converse with offensive minds (Chud, Shula) on a higher level of cognition, then they will take him. If it is like talking to a parrot, then they pass in Cam Newton.

You are right but expect the Panthers to give him every opportunity to try and generate some trade value for himself. That is why I believe that Clausen starts opening day next year no matter what.

Even if we draft Cam and bring in a vet, I think Clausen starts on opening day.

whaaaaat. If a vet is brought in, I don't see Clausen starting unless he proves something in TC.

I doubt Rivera is gonna start his debut season w/ the mindset that Clausen doesn't fit....but I am gonna throw him out there to see if I can increase his value.

I will be shocked if Clausen starts based off what we saw from him and the projected offense they are gonna run. Rivera isn't a lameduck coach......Rivera has also been a little too politely vocal about the importance of QB for me to think Clausen starts unless there is some miracle progression.
