Panthers Bringing in Newton for Visit

First off I do think that Rivera likes Newton and if it were his choice alone might very well pick him.

But it isn't his choice alone and I suspect Hurney will get the biggest say and he gives very little away before the draft. His tendency is to draft guys he didn't even bring in to work out.

But even if they didn't want Newton and were looking for a trade, it would make sense to show quite a bit of interest in Newton given the comment last week that 6 teams had Newton rated the number 1 candidate on their draft board.

Marty Hurney and John Fox took LenDale White out to dinner just to talk privately to him...then drafted DeAngelo Williams.

Getting excited over pre-draft talk and shenanigans is kind of like getting hyped listening to your sister tell you about the blind date she set you up with.

they didn't take him because they saw how much of a punk he is and could probably tell that his work ethic and attitude sucked. probably needed that dinner to confirm ideas that they had about him.

i don't doubt that he was a serious prospect for them, because many did, but once they started investigating teams fell out of love with the idea of him and for a good reason.

i seriously doubt that newton is going to do anything but impress in interviews and conversations.

I agree w/ all that.

At the same time, I think Marty is a smart guy. It is clear what the coaching staff/direction Carolina opted to go in post Fox.....and to most it is obvious Clausen doesn't fit that scheme as well as he could others. Biggest need is QB and Marty knows it. Drafting Clausen was the right move b/c he fell in their laps.......but there isn't much of a point wasting too much time (seasons) on a QB that doesn't fit the new era.

They probably didn't take Lendale because of that dinner..just think of the bill! Also I doubt he has ever had an easy time coming off as likable..

This was as predictable as the sun rise. I wouldn't say that it means nothing either. It could mean eveything if Newton impresses them with his knowledge of football and the way he carries himself.

I think Cam will do very well in interviews. He seems to carry himself very well on and off a field.

I like it, why wouldn't you want to explore all avenues? I have to admit Cam is big, and if he has the intelligence to go with it he could be nasty. Still for the #1 overall it's concerning. Even more so is that with this type of move the Panthers will have to be looking for vet QBs, he has no one to learn from. I still want to see Clausen some more he deserves a valid season, last season was not, and especially not for a rookie.
