Bengals exploring quarterback options

An NFL source says that the Bengals aren't certain their 2011 starter is on the roster at this point. In fact, they are approaching the offseason with the assumption that they won't have Carson Palmer and they're looking at QBs available in the draft (specifically mentioning Cam Newton).

I know folks aren't high on "NFL sources" but this one is probably reliable.

It's the Bengals official Twitter page, quoting head coach Marvin Lewis :sosp:

Why else would the Bengals want to trade up?

As to whether it'd be good to do or not, I wouldn't want to judge that without knowing what they're willing to offer.

Swap picks and throw in their second or swap picks and throw in next year's first and I'm onboard in a heartbeat.

Don't know that the Bengals would offer anything that good, but with a guy like Mike Brown, you never know.

Anyone saying swap 1st rounders for him, according to the Trade Value Chart that's 1200 points of value you're giving up for him, the exact equivalent of the #14 overall pick. Even giving a sizable discount in trading down you should at the very least net a 2nd rounder. You really want to use a 2nd to get Palmer?

He's not worth anything near what his contract is at this point. It's basically a Jake Delhomme situation where the Bengals would trade him away for nothing just to have a team take that contract off their hands. They'll probably just end up cutting him and eating a chunk of it as he plays elsewhere.

Their owner are just crazy enough to not do anything and call his bluff.

If the Panthers are going to acquire a new QB to be their "franchise QB" then I'd rather it be a long term solution rather than a shorter term solution.

But with that said, anyone saying Palmer is now a has been based on this season must be missing something because the guy had one of his best seasons in his entire career and his 2010 stats across the board are better than his stats from the 2009, division winning, playoff numbers.

Personally, I felt like Palmer's struggles, throughout his career, have been largely due to playcalling and coaching. Marin Lewis gets a lot of praise that I personally don't get.

Palmer would be 31 during the 2011 season. If Palmer could be a franchise style of QB for the Panthers for another five seasons (putting Palmer at 36 during the 2016 season) it would give the Panthers the four drafts (2012-2015) and more choices and opportunities to get the exact long term QB they want so they don't have to settle.

Maybe the Panthers see Newton or Gabbert as that QB. If thats the case then go for it and forget about Palmer. If not certain about Newton or Gabbert or even Clausen for that matter then take Palmer if you can and wait until you feel like you're drafting the right guy.

As for compensation, I think the Panthers giving up the #1 overall and their 3rd round pick for the Bengals #4 overall and their 2nd round pick and their 3rd round pick and Palmer would be a fair trade. Basicly we trade picks in the 1st and 3rd rounds and for that we get the Bengals 2nd round and Palmer. I think thats fair considering that if a player trade can take place then a new CBA with probably a rookie pay scale will be in effect as well and that #1 overall is twice as desirable as it was last year.
