Bengals exploring quarterback options

If (and that is a Big IF) the coaching staff think that Clausen could be developed into a franchsie QB, picking up a vet like Palmer for a few years could be very appealing to them.

Damn....I really have no idea what this team is going to do in the draft of FA. The change in coaching philosophy has us all guessing.

if they think clausen can be developed into a QB, they don't need to be sitting him for a year or two. they need to keep his butt out on the field and let him learn what he needs to do. maybe get an old vet as a backup and a second pair of eyes on the sidelines, but they don't need to be sitting him for a couple years while some old vet somes and puts in a mediocre performance and then put clausen back out there for a couple years only to find out that he can't do the job. then we'd have to start the whole "genius" plan again, trying to draft a QB and pick up an old vet for a couple years while the guy we hope is the franchise QB sits around for a couple years. thats 6 blown years at least.

plan has fail written all over it.

Cinci could get Newton where they sit (4th)

I'm just saying if Palmer sticks to his guns and demands a trade,

well if i'm ARZ i'm all over that.

With Buffalo at #3? Wouldn't bet on that.

Plus we could make a lot of noise acting like we're gonna take him ourselves to get a better offer.

getting palmer for a year or two would be a waste. don't want any part of that deal....esp. at the amount he's supposed to be getting paid.

dude is old and he's got a bum arm.

we shouldn't get any QB who doesn't have a chance at being the fulltime, long term starter for us. anything less than that is just us spinning our wheels.

YES and YES!!!

Not so fast my friend.

There is a BIG difference in developing a QB as the #2....and throwing a young QB to the wolves on a bad team.

David Carr, Joey Harrington, etc... come to mind. As does Aaron Rogers at the other end of the spectrum.

If you throw Clausen back out there with a weak team, he may never recover.

A QB like Palmer would allow you to do EXACTLY what Green Bay did with Rogers.....and it is paying off beautifully.

Palmer is not the player of old. However, he still threw for 4,000 yards and 26 TD's last season. A far cry better than anything we have on our roster.

I wouldn't swap with them so they could take our chance at franchise QB or any other choice we want...i'd rather give up late round picks to get him..but honestly he'd only be a stop gap and I hate the idea of a stop gap..My guess is the Cardinals or 49ers would be the real teams to watch for this trade to go down with..

A-Rod didn't sit because he wasn't ready. A-Rod sat because of Favre.

Palmer's contract is a problem. $50 million through 2014. If a trade for #1 picks were to occur, then Palmer's contract would need to be renegotiated. By the way, who says he would want to be traded to the Panthers anyway? If he's unhappy and read to retire in Cincy with the situation (Great WRs), then why would he like the Panthers situation?

Palmer sucks but I'd be open to swapping picks just to get out of #1 overall. Would be more likely(and it would make more sense) to take Green or Peterson or even Fairley at #4 overall.

Horrible logic...

That's like saying "I'm too scared to draft #1 overall because of all the pressure with these boom or bust guys... Let me draft #4 please because at #4 I can get a sure thing"

The pressure of drafting #1 will be reduced by the new CBA, in that the rookie contracts will be reduced and the financial committment will not be as great as it once was. I think this will make selecting #1 overall a little easier, in that a team may not take the safest pick at #1 in the future, but the pick with the most potential, due to the fact they won't have to pay the #1 pick nearly as much and can take the time to develop the player rather than throw them in the fire, due to a high contract that obligates #1 picks to play sooner than later....
