DeAngelo Willams and Charles Johnson get RFA Tenders

Without a CBA in place, no team can make a move to sign DeAngelo and those teams would be dumb to give up picks without knowing what a salary cap is going to look like.

Some teams may take chances on later round RFAs, but if I were a GM I'd certainly stay away from Round 1 & 2 RFAs until they know what the CBA will look like.

Huh??? DW has 5 years in the league. That makes him an UFA even by the old CBA. You cannot place a RFA tender on him. The only time Charles Johnson would be a RFA was last year since he has 4 years accrued. Every other year he would have been a UFA as well. But with no CBA there is not a set number of years to become an UFA or a set amount to tender players. Even if the Panthers want to tender these guys they could not. You better check you source.

This was an un capped year and the players were RFA's through the 5th year. Some players aren't going to like this.

RFA tenders attempt to restrict some players' ability to move teams even if contract is up. Question is whether next CBA will allow this.

There will be no free agency until there is a CBA in place, so teams will know exactly what the cap looks like as well as every other issue around contracts.

This was an un capped year and the players were RFA's through the 6th year. Some players aren't going to like this.

Last year, the last year of the CBA, you could be a RFA with 5 accrued seasons of play in the NFL. Now, with no CBA, you could have 100 accrued seasons and it would not matter. Come March 5th there is no CBA and no set years for anything. And no FA, restricted or otherwise, can sign with another team but the team they played for last year before march 5th.

So putting a RFA tender on someone does what exactly? The player can't sign with another team and they cant be traded either.

I don't think the Panthers or anyone else could do this and I dont see why they would want to either.

I wonder what happens with this and the Franchise tag. The union has already challenged the legality of teams using the Franchise Tag and they will definitely challenge this. The difference being I think the FT will be in the next collective bargaining agreement, but I do not think restricted free agency will extend to year six for players in the next of CBA. It will be interesting to see how it all goes down, but I do feel better that the front office has at least made a public endorsement of keeping Johnson and Williams.

You're right about the 5 yrs. I made the correction in my post. I think it's just a ploy and in the end it won't have any effect. But if a rogue owner (Al Davis) were to want to try and sign CJ or Dwill before Mar 4th, he could. This could keep someone from doing something crazy.

Just my theory. Someone probably has a better perspective on this than I.
