The math just doesn't add up. We have 9 million in cap room. We can cut jakes cap number down to say 6 mill which frees up 5 mill that puts us at 14 million.

With the cuts of lucas etc that frees up say 3 million more which puts us at 17 million. It will take 17 million just to franchise peppers let alone re sign gross. In addition we need about 4 more million in cap room come the draft.

I hate to say it but I think this front office has put us in really bad pickle which is going to allow a franchise top notch player (either Gross or Peppers) to walk.

The fran tag want matter till he signs his contract. Just like any other deal. We all know Pep is gonna have is agent work out a deal and have someone to sign him so no worries. Also they can do accounting tricks to get more cap room.

From the CBA:

(v) For Transition Players and Franchise Players, the tender will be included in Team Salary when made until the player is signed, the tender is withdrawn, the Team's rights are relinquished, or the Tuesday following the tenth game of the regular season (if the player is unsigned).

As of today at 12:30 pm, the Panthers salary cap for the 2009 season is $108million with a cap limit for 2009 of $124 million, per PFT.com

So we are currently 16 million under the cap.

I've told you before, once the fran tag is slapped on a player, teams must immediately account for that money to be expected to pay that player for the current cap restrictions.

You are correct.

I Wonder if thats with the gamble bonus or not, if not we have 26 million. Just curious if that trick is included in that or not.

I am pretty sure the cap does not matter at this point. Even if we have no room we can still franchise pep. We do not have to be under the cap until like June/July I think. So we can still be active in FA we just have to have a plan to get under the cap before the deadline. So if Franchising pep puts us over 17 mil as long as he is traded before the deadline it does not matter. I could be wrong but I am pretty sure this is how it works.

Nope, there are certain dates that teams have to be under the cap by, The first of which is this month I believe February 27th. On that matter we would still have to have the cap room, because the league would have to approve the move and wouldn't do so with us over the cap.

Not sure when the next date is, but I know another date is during camp.
