Wallace to Portland, For 2 first rounders, Pryzbilla + Dante Cunningham

Don't forget Diop.

Wallace seems to have lost what made him special here. I don't know if it was deteriorating ability or lack of motivation, but something was missing. Hopefully this trade will make the team better in the long run.

But I'm not watching tonight's game out of respect for what Wallace was to this franchise. I'm not ready to burn jerseys, but I think a one game boycott is fitting.

I also think Gerald thrives in Portland, so hopefully this is good for him too. He'll always be one of my favorite players.

Someone commented on one of the Observer's articles and if is accurate it gives a great representation of the potential this trade brings:

By the way, did anyone noticed that after this deal, assuming the Bobcats don't excercise the options on Livingston and White (which they shouldn't), by the summer of 2012 they should have enough cap to sign 2 Max deal's and another decent contract (about $36-$38M in Cap space) in the summer of 2012. This is when: C. Paul, D. Williams, D. Howard & C. Kaman, among other can become Free Agents. There are also guys like: K. Hinrich, M. Pietrus, JJ. Hickson, A. Jamison, J. Terry, Nene H., C. Lee, D. West and other Tier 2 guys who will be Free Agents.

If the Salary Cap is around $60M in 2012 (which makes sense, depending on the new CBA), the Bobcats will have anywere between $36-$40M avaliable for that summer and that is assuming they pick the options on DJ and Henderson. Also, you can add the Mid-Level and Bi-Annual Exceptions if they still exist.

So basically they will have: Augustin, Henderson, Jackson (expiring) and Thomas, plus the ability of signing 2 Max deals plus another contract of around $4-$6M per season, and the exceptions. In addition, in the summer of 2013 they'll have an additional $15-$18M avaliable when Jackson, Diop and Carroll contracts expire.

If MJ and his Staff use this Cap Space and Picks wisely, this can end up being the best trade ever. And yes, I will miss G-Wallace, he was my favorite Bobcat and I wish him the best, but from a business perspective, this can end up being a great trade afetr all.

Yea, I don't like losing Wallace and it sets the team back for this season most likely. However it had to happen, they couldn't push Jackson off on anyone and this allows the team to rebuild the right way.

MJ's done said he would spend the money as long as it made the team a Championship level team. With the way the team was built that wasn't going to happen. Now the Bobcats have 5 first rounders over the next few seasons and will have the cap room to build an actual championship contender.

A+ if MJ goes through with it and uses the money wisely

C+ if It doesn't work out (say Charlotte can't get anyone to sign here) as the trade still allows the team to build through the draft and get some young core players.

The thing about the NBA, it's a star driver league. Your team needs one Superstar. No, I don't mean Stephen Jackson, I don't mean Gerald Wallace, and I sure as hell don't mean DJ Augustine or Kwame Brown.

I'm talking shining superstars. Bryant, Carmelo, Williams, Wade, James, Paul, Howard... Names that are instantly recognizable. All Stars.

The "team" dynamic has all but died out in the NBA. Look at the top teams every year in the NBA, who do they have on their teams? Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, Dwight Howard, Ray Allen, KG, and Paul Pierce, DWade and Lebron, Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu... Teams that actually have a chance to compete for the titles have superstars.

That's what the Bobcats need. Not DJ "Whoever the Hell I Am" White, and Dante "No one knows me" Cunningham. We need a star. We don't need to save money.

If Michael wants to win, he better get with the program, or get left behind.

That's the thing people aren't thinking about here, The Bobcats weren't going anywhere and didn't have the Pieces to make a trade for a superstar. The only shot they have at one is convincing them to come here, before you can do that you have to have the money.

Now the Team has the draft picks to maybe select a superstar in the draft or build a good young core of players and convince one or two to come to charlotte.

They didn't have the chance to do that before, now at least the Bobcats have a chance at doing that.

MJ is with the program, that's why this trade was made.

The Bobcats are now in position to offer two "superstars" max contracts in 2012. However, the biggest challenge for MJ will be convincing a big name free agent(s) to sign with Charlotte. Hopefully MJ can do some persuading.

i agree MJ undestands better than most think that we need a superstar on this team. we don't want to become a team like the hawks(good enough to make the playoffs) but not a real threat to do anything. Henderson is starting to come into his own & gives alot of what wallace did except he is more fluid on offense than GW

Bill Simmons grades the trade:

THE FUTURE OF PRO BASKETBALL IN CHARLOTTE: D-minus-minus

In the past six months, the Bobcats gave away three of their best four players (Ray Felton, Gerald Wallace and Tyson Chandler) with two first-round picks to show for it: New Orleans' 2011 first-rounder (in the 20s) and Portland's 2011 first-rounder (ditto). That's a catastrophe. Even worse, you can't totally blame them: Nobody goes to their games, nobody watches them, and if they can't compete for a title, what's the sense of competing at all? Why not bottom out and hope for a miracle? Contract these guys. Move them to Vancouver. Move them to Seattle. Do something. The only way this situation could get worse is if Stephen Jackson decides to run into the stands and start inexplicably punching people.
