Are the Panthers still coddling Bryce?

He had 2 games last year over 251 yards passing.

AFTER the benching he had 5 games of 203 yards or less and only 4 games over 203.

Trying to pull out whatever stat they use to call something a "big time throw" as proof that he's proven be belongs in the league as the face of a franchise is so much more of a delusional take than the opposite.

He improved his play after the benching, but trying to say anything more than that is the delusional take, sorry but those are the facts.

Yards aren't really a good measure alone. He was one of the best QBs in the league in that stretch in most categories but yardage, heh. He definitely was not Burrows but he was pretty good.  Averaged 210 yards passing, 20 yards rushing a game, plus 2 TDs a game.

I'd like to see him continue to improve, but projected over a season those games were just under 4k combined yards (~3600 passing), 35 TDs, 13 TOs. Good for a starter, though not superstar-esque. His raw passing numbers would have been top 15ish, but he proved himself rushing so I don't think that should be ignored.

For me personally I want to see the high level of play over a season. And he still sometimes has several series that are just total head scratchers - I'd like to avoid that, heh.  May be play calling there too.

I think if you get 10 plus poo reactions it should put a border around your post and label it "unpopular post."

I think if you spend excessive time on a message board in 2025 you need to check you life priorities...

It's difficult to take the "we need to make sure we have a back-up QB developed just in case" claim seriously when the only posters I've seen bang that drum are the ones that want(ed) Bryce gone.

While it is a reasonable position to take, we've also seen that it's not exactly coming from a place of sensibility as much as it is hate for BY9.

coddling isnt the word OP should be using

Agreed. There's a fine line between coddling and doing everything possible to help him succeed, WHICH WE ABSOLUTELY SHOULD BE DOING.

That being said...we absolutely have put of eggs into the Bryce basket: "QB whisperer" head coach, $150 last year on FA guards, re-signed all of our o-line FA's this off season, back-to-back 1st round WR's, a VERY pricey trade up to pick him in the first pace. It's a lot for sure. However, if Bryce is not our future franchise QB (I think he is), all of these moves transfer favorably to whoever we end up with.

You realize the irony of posting this on a message board in 2025?  Anyway I didn't mean anything personal about it.  Just how it highlights the post for "popular post" it would be funny to have an "unpopular" one as well.

Regardless you got a topic going with lots of responses.

In relation to the topic.  I was kind of wanting a Leonard or some sort of project QB who can at minimum take over for Dalton for cheap after next year myself.  We did sign one that was undrafted but I'm sure that's just an arm for rookie camp...

This is such an incrediblely stupid take. I'm one of the ones saying we need to have a better backup than Andy Dalton and it has nothing to do with any Bryce hate. Take away the names and look at capabilities of our current QB1 and QB2.

Did you not see what happened to Miami last year? Tua goes down and with 2 of the best WRs in football their juggernaut offense looks like preschool yard ball.

We need to be developing a 2nd QB if we're serious about a playoff run. Dalton showed he isn't good enough to get it done for multiple games. Now whether that means bringing in a different vet or actually trying to develop QB talent for once in franchise history, we need to be looking elsewhere to better the overall team.

Having a reliable backup is a good thing. DA wasn't great, but he was serviceable for a little bit if Cam got hurt. DC is supposed to be a QB whisper so let him whisper to 2 QBs and the team is in a better position. Injuries are part of football. You need to be as best prepared as you can be for the inevitable. I'd be making the same argument if we had Mahomes or Brady and not Bryce.

Eh, I don't think anyone can reasonably accuse me of wanting Bryce gone anymore and I wanted to develop a back up QB, but the total roster is more important. Just the way our holes have been patched it didn't work out well. Part of my desire is because we've got a QB guru has HC... But next year's QB class is supposed to be so, so much better, so that'll be a time to snag a backup.

There's always exceptions. ❤️

The overall idea is more than reasonable as I mentioned... It's just hard to believe it as being sincere from some of the same people that have demanded another QB be taken ever since Bryce was announced as a Panther.

If they exercise his fifth-year bonus option while actively working on a contract extension, then going out and throwing a day three flier at a prospect to hold the clipboard makes a ton of sense. It doesn't make much sense to do that now though (imo). There aren't many teams that are built to be fine if QB1 goes down and if they are it's likely because QB2 had just as strong of a chance of winning the starting position.

Semi-related/unrelated?: What are you looking to see from Allar next year? I remember you being high on him this year... were there any elements to his game that you see as a glaring weakness currently? I expect him to be a day one, at worst day two selection but if he somehow is there on day three... 👀

He has the arm talent you want with good size and mechanics (can break down under pressure). I feel like PSU never really turned him loose, but they also didn’t hard any great weapons not named Warren. I could see him as a Herbert type prospect who makes a better pro when he gets away from his college’s scheme.
I doubt he makes it out of round 1 unless he regresses big time without Warren.

    • Yeah, we kinda found out didn't we. A lot of the people who whined constantly left and a lot of the toxicity just magically vanished with them with zero changes in how we moderated the site. Wild. It's almost like the folks who were constantly complaining about toxicity were causing a lot of the toxicity. Listen, some folks were unhappy here so they left and created a place where they're happier. Good. That's how the internet should work. That's the beautiful thing about the internet. If there isn't a virtual place that you think should exist you can create that place. But you really have to stop trying to drag us back to that place of toxicity. If you like the Discord group, cool. If you still like it here too, great. But don't keep dragging up this bullshit. Do you see me going over to their group and calling them a bunch of whiners? No. They created the place that they wanted and I'm genuinely happy for them. Participate here without constantly bringing that poo up or just leave and stay over there.

    • I think Bryce is going to benefit from TMac’s ability to track the ball especially when the play breaks down. Legette wasn’t great at that last year. Im interested in seeing if XL comes back this year putting more of an emphasis on using his hands to catch the ball. If you go and watch all of XL’s receptions his final season at South Carolina he catches the ball the same way he did his rookie season. He’s never trusted his hands and it shows up when he’s asked to catch the ball over his shoulder. There’s always going to be frustrating drops if that’s how he’s going to try and catch the ball the rest of his career  Scourton lost 20-25lbs after the college season. He actually played at a similar weight to his A&M weight his sophomore season at Purdue when he had 10 sacks. However, he said he felt his body was more tighter (weight wise) carrying that extra 20-25 at Purdue than at A&M. He said the weight loss wasn’t even done purposely but just him learning how to eat correctly.
