Round 1 - Panthers Select Tetairoa McMillan at Pick 8

I don't mind the pick. No, it's not the pick I would've made but I stated in plenty of threads pre-draft that taking T-Mac wouldn't upset me. Bryce finally looked like a guy down the stretch last year who might be a legit starting QB so I get trying to get that blue chip WR to keep that ball rolling. We had a stud in Cam and we failed to put the pieces around him. I'm not mad that we're trying really hard to prevent making that mistake again.

Well the thing about this argument is that you loved Walker and I believe Verse was a better prospect and he went 19. Would that also make taking Walker at 8 bizzaro world?

People are looking at this as if the position drafted determines the quality of the player, and anyone who drafts a player before others would is stupid.  It is about fit.  It is about the extent of research done by the scouts and coaches.  You take the player you want before others who were interested would take them.  Dallas (12) and the Rams were trying to trade up. What we know?  The Panthers valued TMac higher than Walker.  And if the Dallas and Rams rumors are true, there were three teams who thought he was worth at least the 12th overall pick. So was TMac overdrafted?  Comparing him to last year's draft is stupid.  There were a bunch of receivers last year and they were solid.  It was not a normal year--so your control group is skewed.  Secondly, you have the law of "supply and demand."  Did the Panthers need a WR?  Was TMac the best WR this year?  (if you don't count Hunter), probably.  There were other buyers and TMac meets a need.  His value is not determined by previous drafts--it is determined by need, fit, and availability.  Did the Panthers reach?  If the Dallas and Rams rumors were true, NOPE.

I'm not sure Dan and Dave have the luxury to slow walk this thing. That defense has got to drastically improve or this pick will not cover for them. Someone will be sacrificed and the heat will be turned on. Billionaire owns do not subscribe to long rebuilds, especially those over 75 years old. D&D have the same pressure regardless of who they drafted yesterday or today and tomorrow. The basement has been found and they better get out of it this season or the boo's will be back in force.

I really don't think Dan does.  Dan and his team are frankly, a continuation of Fitterer in some aspects.  They own parts/aspects of what happened dating back farther than the last 2 years and don't have the same real start line of Dave.  It's weirder for them.  Plus, Tepper to date has sort of had GM/HCs that aren't really attached.

Dave IMO could probably survive off just a highly productive season from Bryce.  If he started to really get some good output from the passing game and we lose off bad defense.

We tried the fire the coach keep the GM and vice versa approach before and that hasn't worked. Tepper is now trying the hire both at the same time approach. If this fails I think he cleans house top to bottom this time.

I explained in a pre draft thread that XL wasn’t an X receiver and would best be served as a taller, less physical Deebo. Trying to make him an on ball X would have been a huge mistake. You now have someone that is a sure handed guy who can play the X, maybe he’s best as a jumbo slot, we’ll see about that. This was absolutely a team fit. I know board members wanted Walker, but he, like his teammate Williams never had a true breakout season statistically (Butkus award, I know). Position of need, Ideal size, Proven production, Healthy. TMac checked a ton of boxes that quite literally were question marks for several R1 guys.

my preference is to attach them.

I view the Morgan "hire" as muddy.  I think Morgan and a lot of his team's real timeline predates Canales.  I think if Canales really got a lot out of Bryce Young this year.....and still won about 5 games because of defense......it would be a tough call of what to do.

Tepper to date has not shown that much patience with his staff. I cannot see that changing with age. Besides, the fanbase will be screaming for someone's head on a pike on Mint Street and Tepper will not want it to be his.

Yea I think they both get another year unless we're like 0-17 and look like the beginning of last year for the entire season.  In which case they will probably both be publicly executed.

So you hire a QB guru....he proves to be that....and fire him because your GM(and DC) who both predate you from the Frank era can't get the D right?

You are talking about David Tepper here. Has anything he's done since buying the team been logical?

Well, after watching videos, interviews, etc of McMillan, here's a completely unprofessional take on the pick...

I like this kid 🙂

Same here. The shock of the pick through my mind in reverse while traveling 100 miles a hour trying to determine the defensive player they were taking. It took me all night and part of this morning to brush up on the kid because I was convinced they weren't drafting him. D&D cannot be trusted anymore when discussing prospects. Now I've got to come up with a better way to read their real intentions.
