Cam Newton: Self-proclaimed entertainer, icon

anyone using this to stay away from him are probably looking for excuses to not draft him anyways and i doubt it will be much of an issue to those whose opinions really matter (teams/owners/GMs) regardless of what he will be getting paid.

it's a non-issue.

agreed.

but if he walked into an interview, sat down, and said to our FO, "ya know, what I did, most people don't do in 4 years. I'm an icon, an entertainer," I'd laugh so hard. He won't do it, he's smarter than that, but it'd be funny as hell to see the reaction of our guys to it, lol.

“[T]hose types of statements are a little bit putting the cart before the horse,” Moon told Bill Pidto of Sirius Mad Dog Radio, “but this kid has the ability to be that and he’s kinda done that on the college level with what he did in just one year at the University of Auburn. But he’s got to start all over again going into the National Football League. He just really thinks in terms of being great all the time and sometimes, like I said, he gets the cart before the horse and he’s got to just slow down a little bit. But he really feels like he’s going to be a great, great player and that’s what he trains to be.”

“[Y]ou try and filter that as much as you possibly can but I don’t go into every interview with him,” Moon explained. “Again, that’s just how confident the kid is. He trains with a lot of confidence, he has a lot of confidence in his ability, and he could be a little bit more careful with some of the things he says that kind of show that confidence a little bit too much. Sometimes confidence should be something that you keep inside and something that you should just show when you go out on the football field or whatever arena that you are competing in and that’s something he’s got to do a better job of.”

So will the comments help or hurt Newton?

“I think some might and then some might enjoy it,” Moon said. “Some might like that confidence. I think how you handle that confidence is the important part of it and I’m sure those suggestions will be made to him by other people as well. But I would rather have a kid that is really confident in his ability and also goes about doing it as opposed to just sitting back and saying a bunch of things but not really going about doing it than somebody that’s not that confident. So you definitely want a confident person at that position, somebody that feels like he’s going to be a great leader and somebody that feels like he can get the job done when he’s asked to perform in certain situations.”

You know what, I've made the decision to distance myself from all the draft prospects including Cam at this point. I like Cam and I think he has the potential to be great, but there's so much work left to do on these guys that there's no point getting yourself attached to anyone.

There are 5 or 6 VERY good players in the draft who could help us immensely and Hurney has an excellent track record of drafting in the first round, so I'm putting my faith in Hurney and I will trust that whomever he chooses will be the best fit for our team.

Pretty much how I feel. I like Cam but if he gets hyped up enough to get us a plethora of picks at #1 or Rivera/Hurney don't feel he's that deal

I feel the same way. I think we're going to get a good player at a position of need no matter what, and I'm happy with that.

I won't be unhappy if we pick someone like Fairley or Bowers or even Peterson or Green. Whoever we get is obviously going to be a great player. That is what happens when you get your choice of anyone in the draft.

I do hope we draft Newton given that we have only had 2 top 2 picks before this year and who knows when we might have another one. I would have totally bet against it with Fox here but have hope that last year's abysmal performance and the fact that Richardson vowed to fix the offense made people look seriously at upgrading the QB position given Clausen's struggles.. If we don't get Newton in the draft then I hope we at least sign a free agent veteran. Not to hold a clipboard but to start. With our luck or lack of it, we need at least 2 guys who can start.

I want a franchise QB. None of those other positions are going to matter much if we can't sustain drives and score on offense. Unless you build a defense like the 85 Bears or the 2002 Ravens, then you don't have a chance without a really good offense, and that starts with the QB.
