rod rutherford? lol that guy was totally the opposite of a face of the franchise.

Yeah, but they didn't know he wouldn't end up being the face of the franchise when they drafted him, just like New England didn't know that Tom Brady would end up being the face of their franchise.

Is it really surprising or "terrible" this is being discussed? There was a thread last year when Clausen told the Panthers he was the best pick in the draft (lol :(), with many people arguing it highlighted character concerns about arrogance and maturity.

This is not special to Cam Newton. Athletes who say these things openly tend to get threads like this. No big deal - interviews mean much, much more.

I think he actually said the best pick we've ever made

Don't flame me please because im not trying to race bait but do you really think Jerry will draft Cam Newton? Do you think Jerry would want a Black Quarterback as the face of the franchise or as the "identity" of this franchise?
contrary to what some believe, i don't think it's an issue for him.

Steve Smith is the face of the Fran right now... and he has had more than one indecent. Color of skin will have nothing to do with it.

I agree. Smitty has been the face. Peppers was drafted to be a face. Beason is becoming the face until we find some offensive firepower (mainly a QB).

Cam is extremely talented and has a unique skill set. Cam also could help bring excitment to a franchise that has become increasingly dull and predictable. I think Rivera and company will have more say in this draft than most would believe.

regarding the comments made, at the worst it's a very fixable PR problem coming from a guy who's still essentially a young kid who's in the process of becoming a man and a professional. a word from his coaches (and probably the guys working with him now) will help him from repeating this since apparently a lot of panties got wadded up over this. team newton has a lot riding on him and he is going to be the face of black QBs for a long time, so they are going to want to help him become as professional as possible.

i seriously doubt any teammates of his would be upset by anything he said and it would result in nothing more than a roll of the eyes and a "please don't do that again". people are making just too big of a deal about it. from everyone who has worked with him and played with him, he has been nothing but the best teammate, leader, and example (on the field and in the past couple years off the field).

imo, many people are making a big deal about it because they want as many flaws to be seen in him as possible to justify their bias (not meaning racial, but for some it might apply) against him. i know PFT is all over it and they are nothing but a pile of steaming caca anyways.

anyone using this to stay away from him are probably looking for excuses to not draft him anyways and i doubt it will be much of an issue to those whose opinions really matter (teams/owners/GMs) regardless of what he will be getting paid.

it's a non-issue.
