Brandt says we should take Newton

Russell was a very impressive prospect, turns out he couldn't handle everything that came with being a pro QB.

There were always questions about Russell's work ethic and self-discipline (particularly as it pertained to him struggling to stay in shape) and I have never seen anyone question Cam's work ethic, infact I've seen most folks praise his work ethic.

Don't get me wrong, Cam is a big risk, but he's got enough potential that I think it's a risk worth taking. We've played it safe for so long, can't we roll the dice just one time?

I want better odds.

I'm all for rolling the dice when the situation is right. But for us, right now, it isn't.

Don't agree at all. That is the same kind of logic that Fox used to avoided drafting a Qb as well. It meant he couldn't produce back to back winning seasons and got him fired. I hear what you say but it is more than time to take a risk or two because the reward is very high and it isn't as if you can find a franchise quarterbaxk in FA. Exactly how many guys besides Cutler or Brees have been available lately. Cutler has not been that good really and Brees got picked up because Peyton took a chance on a guy with recent shoulder surgery.

If you don't draft a franchise QB you don't get one, plain and simple.

Brandt in 2007...

Wrong on both counts :(

Other quotes from that year (link)

Jon Gruden

Mel Kiper Jr

Todd McShay

Terry Bradshaw

And a guy who actually was a lot closer to being right than some of his more esteemed colleagues...

That one was from Pete Prisco :sosp:

Similarly, if you research the Manning-Leaf debate, you'll find there were a fair number of professional scouts who thought Leaf would be the better pro. Some even publicly chided the Colts for taking manning at #1 instead of Leaf.

Yes, scouts know more than we do about the business, but they're far from perfect.

Here we go again........

What do we have to lose?

I mean seriously, we've got the worst rated starting QB in the NFL right now (granted he was a rookie) and we're planning to run an offense that sounds like an even worse fit for him then the offense we ran last year.

I know Peterson, Green, Bowers, etc all seem like they could be really solid pro's but none of them will help us win championships until we find a franchise QB and Cam has the potential to be that guy.

We have a whole group of safe/solid 1st round picks on the roster right now in Beason, Gross, Stewart, Gamble, etc and look what that got us without a franchise QB.

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Exactly, playing the middle of the road has gotten us middle of the road results. It's time for us to take a risk.

What do we have to lose by screwing up the number one pick? A lot. Quite possibly years of setback.

I'd rather go the veteran route.

I agree with you dude. I've been saying for ages now, you don't just gamble because your cold odds say that drafting a QB is worth the risk/reward. You should be saying that drafting NEWTON is worth the risk/reward, because only then we you account for the probability of Newton transitioning into the NFL. If Newton shows that he has the mental capacity to succeed in the NFL, fug yes, go take him, but you don't gamble just because you need a certain position. That's just bad decision making in any field.

If I thought Newton, Gabbert or anyone else was worth the #1, I'd be all for it. I don't. The team may or may not have a different opinion. If they do, I hope they're right rather than me.

What I'm not going to do is fall into the old "bait and switch" trap, which is what I see a lot of folks doing. We all want the quarterback position fixed, and we all believed it would be up until January 7th. Now you've got a schism between folks who want it fixed the right way vs folks who want it fixed right now. For my part, I think the members of the "right now" crowd are doing dome big time rationalizing.

One or the other of our respective groups is making a mistake. We'll find out who...eventually.

Anyone know of Newton's history in regards to injuries? I want my #1 overall being durable, minor injuries are alright the man is a football player. But knee injuries and recurring things scare me. He will be taking a beating as a big body who can move outside the pocket in the NFL (similar to Vick).

Otah and Stewart come to mind, both men had some injuries throughout college and continue to deal with troubles every season thus far.

    • It will be interesting to see who is still available at #4.  There could be a player someone drastically needs and will be willing to give up a nice haul to get him.  Getting an extra round one pick in 2026 would be nice.
    • First of all, I think we should fix as many areas as possible other than QB going into 2025.  Young has played well the 2nd half of the season and needs more evaluation.   I think DL should be our focus whether it is Graham or Carter with our 1st pick. I wouldn't be sad if we used our 2nd round pick on another D-Lineman.  It will be much easier to get a WR on a one- or two-year free agent contract than to pick a WR that could be JAG.  This also gives XL and Coker another year to develop.  Our free agent picks in 2024 for the D-Line were, IMO, designed to complement Brown.  Once Brown went out those players were mediocre.  We need to have insurance in case Brown comes back and doesn't perform to his pre-injury play.  Sadly, I think we should move on from Evero.  He doesn't seem to have the heart for this team.
