Brandt says we should take Newton

I'm on board.

I have to admit, I'm starting to get there myself.

Scam's potential is HUGE. The bust potential is also HUGE. However, if there is a rookie wage scale in the new CBA, which I view as a near certainty, I say take him. The potential would be enough to make me pull the trigger if we can limit the amount of guaranteed money through a rookie wage scale. What has killed teams in the past with high draft picks busting is the amount of guaranteed money they have tied up in those contracts. You're literally risking the future of the franchise on that pick because it kills your cap situation if that kid is a bust. If that is no longer true and the money gets reeled in, then a guy like Scam becomes much more attractive IMO. I wouldn't want him at the type of money high picks have gotten in recent years. There's simply too much risk there. If we were paying that type of cash, I'd take Peterson. He's a much safer pick IMO and plays a high dollar position. I would say Green, but a WR just isn't worth the type of $$$ that the #1 pick has garnered in the past. Plus, a WR isn't going to help us with our current crop of QBs.

Not making any judgement on Newton.

However, you can also remember when every expert had JaMarcus Russle as the consensus number 1.

All it proves is that none of these guys know who is going to be a bust or not.

It's an inexact science, that's the nature of the business... still not sure what Jamarcus Russell has to do with Cam Newton? they are apples and oranges.

True but Russell's demise had nothing to do with scouts. He did ZERO work. His skill set was amazing but he decided to waste his talent. That is something that is hard to gauge.

son of a bitch. Damn you Godfather, Damn you....

the Godfather is still the main man many teams look to for advice on draft picks and the old fart can still pick em. If I owned this team I would bring him in as a draft consultant so I guess who he says go with at #1 is clear cut.

Damn you ....

Peter King reports that Newton told him in a phone interview today, “I see myself not only as a football player, but an entertainer and icon.”

As King notes, that’s the kind of comment that makes old-school football coaches blanch. Newton’s talent is undeniable, and yet I have a feeling there are more than a few NFL coaches who see comments like that and wonder if Newton is the kind of guy they want in their locker rooms.

Per PFT

Sure you guys have heard this, what's your take? I think Cam hit it on the head & was being honest. Nothing wrong with it IMO.
