Marty's first round draft pick history.

If Hurney could swap the #1 pick for Palmer and a second or third round pick, I'd say he would. Don't know of many better QB's that will be on the market. If the Bungles got Cam and he turned out to be great, I'd have to relocate, I don't mind that, but I'd hate to see the Bungles get another franchise guy. Palmer know's the Bungles are a dead end, that's why he want's out of there. Would love to see him in a Panther jersey. I live near cincy so the Bungles fans drive me crazy, that's why I'd relocate, or I'd throw one off the bridge! I don't need that no matter how fun it might be.

I think Marty has had some good success in the first round. Thomas Davis stands out as a relatively risky pick given we converted him to a LB from a safety and honestly while he has great potential he has never been as good as he should be.

As for the rest, they have been solid. As for the second round though, it is abysmal.

Safe picks so far have landed us inconsistency and failure to even have back to back winning seasons. Why? Failure to take a franchise quarterback in the first. Hurney saw the light last year but it was the old deadly second round which has largely haunted us over the years. It is time to draft the best QB available and take a chance in the first round. Unless of course everyone is happy at our record over the past 9 years.

...Obviously, I'm partial towards Cam Newton - but given Hurney's skill at drafting I will be at peace with whomever we end up taking this year.

I agree, but his love affair with Clausen, should Clausen turn out to be a bust, must scare you a little.

HOWEVER, Chud is in, Davidson is out. Shula is in for Scherer. I imagine this difference will be HUGE. So, if we take Newton it means 2 things to me:

1. They admit Clausen is a mistake (I would respect their insight into that because he was under their microscope for a year)

2. They feel Cam Newton is going to be a solid NFL QB.

I keep thinking Vince Young. I also keep thinking that there is a ton of hype around this guy. Scary to me.

If the Rams had been willing to deal, We would have traded this year's first rounder for the rights to draft Clausen at 32. So, I guess you can say that we are lucky to be having this discussion.

hype is good for possibility of trade tho

I really hope so. As much as I am opposed to drafting Newton because there are so many red flags, part of me wonders if I will regret it. What gets me is how everyone on here seems so certain he will bust or he will be a star. Nobody knows. NOBODY. So, trading the pick and bringing in a veteran seems to be the Panther thing to do. I do not see them giving up on Clausen just yet, but I do not see him getting the keys to the car yet either.

Rivera wants to win now and thinks he can. Newton is 1-2 years away. He likes Volek. I see Volek as our starting QB next season.

Trade down, and if you want competition for JC, draft Ponder in the second if he falls to the pick we get. If not, I expect Gabbert's stock to drop for not participating in the combine. I guess that would be Grudenish, but I don't have the answer, other than work with Clausen and bring out his best.

where did rivera say he likes volek?

http://www.derp/2011/1/19/1943791/is-billy-volek-the-right-veteran-qb-for-the-carolina-panthers

read the bottom segments after the article.

This is one article I read that suggests he was familiar with Volek. You made me look, and I could not find where Rivera stated he liked Volek. Would that be tampering at this time?
