The "draft and groom future QB, sign a vet to start for 2 yrs" plan

kitna had been there a couple years. they had their starter already entrenched into the role. that isn't our situation. we're talking about going out and finding a vet stop gap. kitna had ben in the league a few years and had some success. they weren't going with him being a stop gap solution. his first season with them he threw 12 TDs and 22 INTs, the next year he only won 2 games. they knew they were going to be needing a QB so they drafted one in the best round for drafting a franchise QB.

Tell me what the difference is if Cincy was using Kitna to stop the gap for Palmer, and us bringing in someone to stop the gap for Jimmy? Because as you said, Kitna wasn't good in his 1st 2 years with them, which is why they drafted Palmer. Who cares if he was the starter, it's the same situation

What was the point of your response?

the conversation was about specifically going out and getting someone you intend to be the stop gap QB at the same time you draft one you hope to groom as your franchise QB. that isn't what the bengals did.

they didn't intend for kitna to be the stop gap for palmer, it just worked out that they kept using the guy who was entrenched in the role until they thought the QB they drafted was ready to go.

there is a difference, whether you see it or not.

if kitna had been cut from the team or there was no person who was entrenched in the job, palmer likely would have bene given the start.

if the situation had taken place in the past 3 years where kitna had been the starter and not doing well and they drafted palmer, i have little doubt that palmer would have gotten the start and they probably would have released kitna or tried to trade him away (depending on what his contract looked like, which he was only getting $2-3mil a year anyway).

Why would I be in favor of acquiring a vet and Newton in the draft. Injuries. Especially if we go to an 18 game season. In 2008 Jake stayed relatively healthy but before that it was 2005 and no quarterback has started all 16 games since 2008. We need 2 starters who can both play so when the inevitable injuries hit we won't take a nosedive like we did with Weinke in 2006 and in 2007 when Jake got hurt.

I don't ascribe to the idea that the vet should start while the young guys sit unless he is the best of the 3. I say bring in as many guys as we can to fix the problem and let the chips fall where they may.

that's fine. what people aren't getting is that i'm actually in favor of getting a vet, but to be a backup. they should be nothing more than a contingency option.

in free agency there are plenty of capable backups (guys that can come in and keep you competitive for 3 games if your QB has a minor injury), but none of these guys are starter material, and we're deluding ourselves if we think they can play to that standard of consistency, instinct and leadership.

agreed. with little exception, if they were capable of doing it, they wouldn't be available.

as a backup or second pair of eyes, it would be worth it.

if we aren't going to be drafting newton (or any other QB in the first) then i want a younger vet QB who could actually compete for the starting gig rather than have an old guy come in as a stop gap.

i seriously doubt that any of the old guys have much upside at all over the younger guys that are available.

You just admitted I was right, without coming out and just saying it. Palmer wasn't intended to be the stop gap guy, BUT THAT'S WHAT HE BECAME.

If they felt like he had a real future with Kitna, why would they draft Carson Palmer #1 overall? Because Kitna was that "stop gap guy".

It is the same situation, but for some reason you want to debate me on it when clearly the facts prove me right.

in any event carson palmer's won like zero playoff games for them and the bengals are one of those teams you'd least mistaken for a consistent contender so lol

Not at all, unlike you Im a Sugar Bowl Champion. And I see you resorted to childish games, much like when I tried telling you for months when we would NOT get Andrew Luck.:D

You won the sugar bowl?

Or is your life so shitty that you live through some college team and claim their accomplishments as your own?
