AJ Green combine Prep

It's actually more likely that Green would get to touch the ball 2-3 times a game as a rookie, if that. And if you want to improve the running game, then Cam Newton is the ultimate weapon. Just look at what Vick and Vince Young did for their RB's, and Cam is a better pocket passer than either one of them were. Unless Clausen gets a hell of a lot better in a hell of a hurry, a WR won't matter anyway. And I don't even want to hear about a "steady veteran" QB. Billy Volek isn't any more stable than Clausen is right now, and he's about the best we can hope for.

none of that really has anything to do with the future.. that argument has a shelf life of only about a year or 2 (hopefully)..

I will be thrilled if we draft Cam Newton.. but if we don't and we draft Green, I'll be just as thrilled.. the difference has to do with how our scouting department and coaches feel about Newton. if they don't draft him, I'll trust (until otherwise proven by actual results on the field) that they didn't see enough of a ceiling..

if they do draft him, great.. I feel they saw everything they were looking for in a future QB..

but if we draft Cam and he doesn't work out, we are still without someone throwing the ball.. and if Cam doesn't work out, it would surely be nice to have drafted Green instead, so when we do find a QB, we'll be sitting pretty.

The thing is, we can count on getting a good WR next year, or even in the later rounds this year, but we can't count on getting a franchise QB unless we're picking in the top 5, at least. The same goes for DT. Kris Jenkins was a 2nd round pick and he was considered to be one of the best in the NFL when he was still healthy and motivated. How many 2nd round QB's make that kind of impact?

depends if Cam is the guy or not.. I'll take the scouting department and coaches opinion since they know more about this stuff than we do.

but if they don't see a future QB in Cam, then to pick him just because doesn't make a whole lot of sense..

But if they do see him as their future QB, then it's a no brainer. Hell, we already have 3 2nd year WR's and Steve Smith anyway. Personally, I really like LaFell and Gettis, and who's to say that Armanti Edwards won't come into his own this year? Everybody says that was a wasted pick, but the truth is, we don't know how good he can be yet. WR's usually take a couple of years to develop anyway, and Edwards is doing it for the first time since HS.

of course, it's hands down the only option if they do see him as our future.. we can get by with our receivers..

we'll see how Edwards does in 2 years.. if he shows up earlier (or at all), great.

"Franchise qbs only come from the top 5 of the draft"

Stop. Stop with the bullsh*t.

How is that BS? Sure, there are exceptions like Tom Brady who was taken in the bottom of the draft, and there are guys like Aaron Rodgers who fell into the bottom of the 1st, but you can't skip drafting a QB because you're counting on the stars to align just perfectly so that one of those guys falls in your lap next year.

There certainly haven't been a lot of Tom Brady's in the 6th round of the last 4-5 drafts, that's for damn sure.

Clausen to Green = LOL

Moore to Green = meh

Rookie to Green = Growing Pains (what a great TV show)

Steady FA to Green = the only option...and why we won't take Green

Moore to Green = Meh?

Have you seen Smitty's numbers with Moore? Fault Moore all you want for other things but one thing he does great is get the ball in his play makers hands.

The comparisons to 89 are interesting because as good as 89 has been, even HE wouldn't have been worth a #1 overall pick in the draft even if you had a crystal ball that showed you exactly the kind of production you would get from him throughout his career. There isn't a single receiver in the league today that would have been worth a #1 overall pick if you had that crystal ball except possibly Randy Moss if he's even still in the league.

This is absolutely NO slight to Green at all. I love him, he's incredible and he'll turn into a Pro Bowl receiver. But we're talking about #1 overall here. That means you think this player will do more for your team than hundreds if not over 1,000 players that submit their names for the draft. A #1 overall player should, in theory, be a rock for your franchise for 12+ years. Taking a receiver there when you look at who we currently have at quarterback vs. receiver on our roster just doesn't make sense no matter how good he is.

Has there ever been a #1 selection that has actually been worth the #1 pick?

WR is one of the positions with the longest career. Green has the ability to last a very long time because he also has the size to adapt his game once his abilities fall off.

Hell even a physical DT like Fairley maybe only good for 5 or so years. It's possible he could burn out. So I guess another way to look at this is taking a WR who could bolster what we already have at WR vs. taking a QB at #1 no matter how good he is.

Just playing Devil's advocate here. If Green is good, he will be good for a long time.

lol most improved record in nfl history. also the backup in new england, brian hoyer, reminds me of jake delhomme circa 2002 http://www.projo.com/patriots/content/Patriots_Hoyer_09-03-10_VAJPC6H_v2.245cdf5.html

Being an MSU grad and homer, I would jizz myself if we had him. I was also screaming for us to pick up Blair White (on the Colts).

On topic: AJ Green is my #1 want, with PP being second. I just don't like the negatives I hear about Fairly to want him as #1, and DT seems like a position that can be gotten later in the draft.

    • In the past 7 years we wouldn’t have had to TBH. We would have been better off realizing we lost Cam, Luke and many others. It was time to do an actual rebuild and save the cap space so we could keep our “good” (huddle consensus) draft picks like extending Trey Smith and Creed Humphrey instead of having cap space to burn since the long snapper and TMJ didn’t work out. Also, have enough cap space to keep some offensive weapons like CMC and Moore because we don’t have to trade up for a QB or didn’t have to “recover” picks lost in poo trades. One other note here is that, the consensus huddle would have jumped at the chance to get two 1sts and a 2nd for Burns. That alone would have been the best FA/trade move made in the history of the Panthers. It is 100% indisputable fact that a huddle consensus GM, from 2018 to 2024, would have done way better and we’d have a playoff contender right now. Maybe not a SB/NFC winning team but likely the best team in the NFC South rather than a hey we lost close games to the teams in the SB even though our D set a single season points allowed record.
