Question for the health food folks

I've cut back on my portions more than what I eat. I'd go crazy eating super healthy all the time. I used to order 20 chicken wings with fries...now just 10 and get sweet tater fries :)

This helped me lose a lot of weight.

It's little changes like that that can make a huge difference. Of course i would drop the fries and have a healthier side because i was already eating a yummy main dish.

Also changing from regular mayo to lite mayo. And whole milk to skim or 1%

My metabolism still burns calories like a furnace I have to probably eat around 5000 calories a day and lift weights to gain weight. I've had bad knee problems and apparently that makes my body subconsciously not use them or something. I lose weight/size in my legs fast.

But i still eat balanced and healthy. The only red meat I buy is usually very high quality, I do a lot of custom ground beef because it's very satisfying.

I make a salad with kale, chicken, cranberries, and walnuts that is delicious all the time. I don't get bored too easily.

i'll add a slightly different perspective. i am not a health food nut but i am a foodie. yeah, basically one of those trendy dudes that used to be a chef, moved on to something else, and still loves to cook and eat good food. i used to be able to east wahtever i wanted - metabolism started to go away when i was 25 or so and i added about 20 pounds over the course of the last four years. i would cook a lot but wasn't really paying attention to the nutritional content of the food i was eating or how the meals i consumed related to each other over time - meaning i'd have really healthy meals for a week then not so healthy but damn delicious meals the following week.

the solution for me was to get away from making dinner every night. i know that sounds strange, but the problem was that i'd go to whole foods or fresh market every night after work and assemble a meal on the fly based on whatever my tastebuds or my girlfriends tastebuds were asking for. bad on the waist and bad on the budget. so we started making a lot of healthier foods in advance - large batches that can sustain us through most of the week. it was healthier and more affordable. stuff like homemade hummus - garbanzo beans, tahini, lemons, garlic plus carrots and celery - $15 will buy you enough goodies for roughly three large batches that can each last a week. i know that none of this is rocket science, but creating large batches of stuff ahead of time has actually helped us both be better about cost, portions, and nutritional value/health.

also...if bread is a part of your diet, and is definitely something i love, then make your own bread. same goes for pasta. i make two loaves of bread almost every weekend and try to make fresh pasta a few times each month. if your avoiding carbs then ignore this entirely, but when you make bread and apsta from scratch it's comforting to know that there are only a few ingredients and you know exactly what's in it. same logic that applies to using fresh veg and meats instead of frozen dinners. if you'll spend an hour making dinner from fresh veg and meat instead of microwaving a five minute frozen dinner, why won't you spent an hour making fresh bread or fresh pasta instead of buying the cheap crap at the store?
