Anyone store food?

The TP thing is more of a comfort thing...

If I were you, I'd be wary of kits...

Write your own list of things that you'll want in the worst case scenario and then go out and get those things individually and construct your own kit.

I agree with these. Other than a fire starter kit. Just something simple for the first fire.

For water filtration, and since you're looking for BO property, I'd find somewhere you can put a well with both manual and solar powered pumps... You can make your own further filtration system by using sand and charcoal, and then boil it up to further clean it in the worst case scenario... I hear a lot about the Katadyn filters, if you're looking for one to carry with you... Me personally, I just keep lots of bottled water stored, and know ways of getting/cleaning water just about anywhere I'll find myself stranded...

Salt and Sugar are important ones, as you can use them in food but also in makeshift medical situations, so long as you keep them sterile...

I have been looking into this "charcoal and sand" I just have not fully understood how to make one myself just yet. Any websites you suggest?

I put together my own fire kit... I have multiple ways to start one in it:

a lighter

waterproof matches

magnesium stick

flint and steel

magnifying glass

it also has:

dryer lint (an excellent kindling)

hand sanitizer (alcohol burns)

petroleum jelly soaked cotton balls

it is easy, all you have to do is alternate layers of charcoal and sand, and as a general rule have a sand layer at the top... I'd still boil any water after using this system, as microbial particles can sneak through...

You can find videos on YouTube or find some DIY sites through google, but all you need is a container big enough to hold several layers for how much water you're trying to filter at once time...

You don't have to have sand and charcoal... You can keep stuff like iodine, chlorine (plain bleach), or purification tablets (a combination of both, basically) on hand as disinfecting agents, and use cloth and other methods to filter the particulates out...

My best advice for overall survival knowledge would be to watch the 2 seasons of the Discovery show "The Colony" somehow, anything and everything done by Les Stroud (Survivorman), read some books at the library or buy them at the bookstore (Peterson field guides, military handbooks, survival books, Walden, etc.), and just get out there and learn hands on...

Practice makes perfect, and having a bunch of stuff sitting around waiting for the poo to hit the fan will get you nowhere if you don't know how to use it!

I have enough food to last 3 months for a family of 4, If I had to it could last 4-5 months. I have a ton of can poo and rice that I'm constantly rotating. I have antibiotics, pain killers and bunch of other medical supplies. I own 1 gun with 10 bullets.

My only problem is my water supply, I have a few gal of bleach to purify any water but nothing stocked besides my hot water tank. I have saved several milk/fruit jugs so I could hopefully fill them quickly if needed too.

I always keep 1 extra carton of smokes and have over 30 cans of smokeless Camel tobacco.( the old Camel coupons) nice

I keep 10 gal of gas in my shed

I have 1 gas tank I keep for grilling

Instant coffee

3 large boxes of powder milk.

I have about a dozen gal jugs of fruit drinks, which we rotate and restock.

I dont drink but have a few bottles of liquor.

I'm not where I need to be but will be better off then most.

on the antibiotics note, I read a great article in one of my magazines the other day that talked about getting them somewhere you might not think, without a prescription...

pet stores...

yep... the same antibiotics they give horses and fish and other animals are generally the same thing you get prescribed when you go to the doctor...

I'm going to be looking into getting some to keep on hand...

They stopped selling them in pill form, it's all powder now, and dosing is almost impossible. And they tasted horrible, because there were no coatings or buffers.

buy a dehydrator and make your own - save hundreds of dollars...

The time it would take me to dehydrate a years worth of food is worth me paying. But to some its not, so i understand.

My folks had a dehydrator back years ago. I always liked banana chips...yummy.
