Anyone store food?

Humans cant eat acorns they make you sick. But we did have black walnuts and chestnuts. But the chestnuts started getting chinese worm disease. Black walnuts was good but a pain to crack and had a messy soft shell. I used to sit in the basement and crack nuts with my dad when I was a kid.

This is incorrect... Not saying you meant it this way, but people can, do, and have historically eaten acorns... It takes a bit of preparation to make them palatable and remove the bitterness and tannin, but you can do it...

I suggest everyone learn this, or at least print it out and store it away for future use...

You can also find field guides for edible plants of the US, or other parts of the world... in any good bookstore or online...

Always good to be prepared... Welcome to the club...

I've started dehydrating my own foods and keeping a decent stock on canned/packaged foods with a longer shelf life... Anything in a can will virtually retain its nutritional value LONG after the printed "use by" or "sell by" date... It may not keep the flavor, but it keeps what you need for the most part... Hormel Chili, dried beans/fruits/vegetables, Spam, etc... I've not gotten into the canning process, yet... but I plan on doing so once I get my garden going this spring (which I also recommend anyone planning ahead do)...

Keep in mind that you can also stock up on other consumables that will be comforts should the shelves in the stores empty... stuff like toilet paper, matches and lighters, alcohol and cigarettes (even if you don't smoke or drink), and stuff like that will be more valuable in a worst case scenario than money will...

Toilet Paper? I figured Id go MidEast and just my bare left hand and a rag...

Im going to go the lazy man route and buy most of this stuff as a kit. But i will need to get things like Sugar, Salt, cooking oil and Wheat. Also, the place where I plan to buy from discounts the water purifiers when you buy the 1 year supply. Will also get some garden seeds.

Starting to look for a bug out piece of property.

The TP thing is more of a comfort thing...

If I were you, I'd be wary of kits...

Write your own list of things that you'll want in the worst case scenario and then go out and get those things individually and construct your own kit.

For water filtration, and since you're looking for BO property, I'd find somewhere you can put a well with both manual and solar powered pumps... You can make your own further filtration system by using sand and charcoal, and then boil it up to further clean it in the worst case scenario... I hear a lot about the Katadyn filters, if you're looking for one to carry with you... Me personally, I just keep lots of bottled water stored, and know ways of getting/cleaning water just about anywhere I'll find myself stranded...

Salt and Sugar are important ones, as you can use them in food but also in makeshift medical situations, so long as you keep them sterile...

As for my house....

I have plenty of each:

Canned foods, Weapons, Ammo, Extra wood (plywood / 4x4's) propane tanks (big and small) 2 cookers (1 propane / 1 wood) old fashion lamps (with lamp oil), fire starter kit, hand tools (non-electric old school style). Only issue is the water tablets and water storage. I buy bottled water and rotate it by dates right now BUT I have to come up with a better way just in case crap really hits the fan. Call me crazy but my neighbors and I are all ready with plenty to bring to the party if things ever get bad. Example was the last major winter storm. we were all fine and having a great time while others were searching stores for basic stuff.
