DT Mike Patterson - potential FA pick up

Mike Patterson, DT, Eagles. Age: 28.

Mike Patterson doesn't provide much of a pass rush, but he's an excellent run defender. He's a 4-3 player only. There's some dispute about whether Patterson is a free agent or not. A Washington Post salary cap expert believes Patterson will become a free agent if no CBA is met by March 4.

Should make for a smooth transition to our defense for not big $$$ hopefully, depending on his opinion of McDermott and what is decided about his status as a FA. Might be FA DT #1, hopefully in addition to Cofield (or Mebane if not Cofield).

A younger Hollis Thomas maybe? Or a poor man's Kemo? I can see him being a viable candidate for the FO, as he probably knows the system, but until there's a CBA then it won't matter if he's a free agent or not.

But if there isn't, then because of his familiarity I bet the closer to the start of the season we get, the more of a target he becomes.

Doesn't Patterson play the nose?

Landri and Patterson are two very different DT's, not to mention stats for DT's can be very misleading.

Did Patterson play the 0 technique last year. Jim Johnson always ran more of a true 4-3 lining up the tackles in the A gap in 1 gap assignments. That would make Landri and Patterson operating very similarly.

As for stats, what else is there? Subjective film observation with different teammates. schemes, and circumstances.

This site said he received a 7 year extension in 2006 making him a free agent in 2016.

What I see is a first rounder that is still under contract that is going no where else but Philly. Again he doesn't seem better than Landri and played in a similar role.

According to walterfootball there's been contention whether he's a FA or not, but he's expected to become one. And I've been a big supporter of Landri, I think we keep him. Even if the two of them would fill the same role in our defense (we don't know yet) he'd probably be a good pick up for rotation purposes.

I would love to have Patterson. I saw where someone mentioned Landri having better stats, but I don't believe they are the same kind of DT. I also don't know if anyone remembers but our old D line coach said Landri was used to much last year and is more of a situational Player. I think we should use Landri as our #3 DT and use Patterson and FA or drafted DT for starters with Landri as our situational DT.

I have never liked Hayden but he seemed to play a lot better this year so I wouldn't mind to see us keeping him but only as a back up. I feel that DT is our weakest link on our defense and we must improve that position. Patterson would be a great start.

    • I don't think Rodgers but probably not for the political reasons I bet a lot of posters are motivated by. I just think he is not the QB for the Panthers, at all.
    • Sun Devils just scored another TD on BYU, 14-0
    • It wasn't great but  the 2022 NYG won 9 of 16 games plus a playoff game. He had a 92.5 passer rating. 15 pass TDs 3200 yards, 7 rushing TD, 700 yards 6 fumbles 3 lost.  His first season he had 18 fumbles lost 11. Wow.  Anyhow he had problems in 2023 with injuries and didn't win poo before tearing his ACL. This year, no Barkley, not good, but you know.... these ACLs take a while and it was right and he throws right so pushes off of it.  I agree it doesn't hurt to let that guy compete cheap. You don't hand him the job like with Bryce or NYG with him.  When I look at what we have been saddled with, he doesn't look worse and has the physical advantage. So I don't get the umbrage given our situation. This "No we won't settle for anything less that the best" attitude and then taking Bryce Young was pathetic and I think that attitude brought us to where we are. That's where that poo gets you. Away from Mayfield, away from Darnold, even away from PJ - just to replace them with an inferior PJ.  At the same time I am not really advocating for the guy just looking at it objectively. It could be another guy with the same story. And yes the odds of him getting it are low but the numbers and performance from 2022 are for sure better than we see with Bryce even after a season of major propping him up with better players around him. Take a look don't take a look he fails or he doesn't fail...   to instead sit here and be happier with what we have is bullshit.
