Hypothetical trade scenario

I would pick Cam Newton number one overall. And tell Arizona I can't make that trade because it wouldn't be fair to you. That would be the worst trade Arizona ever made.

I have been pimping Cam Newton like crazy on this board. If we had the 5th pick and somebody said we are trading our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and next years 1st to get Newton. I wouldn't say a word and just slap that person across the face.

But for the sake of the thread, I would probably go Green. Especially if Smith is gone. Pick up a DT at 35th (possibly Austin), after that I would use nearly every pick left on offense (maybe a CB somewhere there is usually decent value late at that position), try to convince Moore to a short term contract, and hope Clausen progresses or that a strong QB class comes through next year. There are many variations. First, you could swap firsts, and get their second rounder, but they have multiple needs too. So you allow them to give you there first and second in 2012.

But we need to pick Newton.

You do realize that if the Cardinals wanted the first pick, it would cost about that much, don't you? I stated that earlier in detail. I can't believe it either, but this is why we def. need to trade down. I think it would be smart to get the first in 2012 with any team interested in trading up for Newton. THis gives us 1/16 of a chance to get Luck next season.

MHS831: This seems like a Madden trade scenario but if you say so... I would pick Peterson/Green/ in that order if they were available I guess....

I don't play Madden --Take a look at the history of first round trades and what teams got--it will amaze you. If I have the opportunity to solve your problems at QB (in this scenario, the franchise QB you have been seeking since the franchise lost Jake Plummer, (Warner was a semi-retired drifter who got his second wind), you consider this deal.

Here is the Cards QB situation since moving to the desert:

Neil Lomax (14 games started) 1988

Cliff Stoudt (2) 1988

Gary Hogeboom (13) 1989

Tom Tupa (13) 1989-91

Timm Rosenbach (20) 1989-92(missed all of '91 with knee injury)

Stan Gelbaugh (3) 1991

Chris Chandler (17) 1991-93

Steve Beuerline (21) 1993-94

Jay Schreoder (8) 1994

Jim McMahon (1) 1994

Dave Kreig (16) 1995

Boomer Esiason (8) 1996

Kent Graham (14) 1996-97

Stoney Case (1) 1995-98

Jake Plummer (73) 1997-2002

Dave Brown (7) 1998-2001

Jeff Blake (13) 2003

Josh McCown (22) 2002-2005

Shaun King (2) 2004

John Navarre (1) 2004-06

Matt Leinart (16) 2006-present

Kurt Warner (52) 2005-present

If they really like Newton, they will pull the trigger and make the trade. Gabbert and Mallett are dropping into the second rounds. Ponder may creep into the first round. Unless they like a longshot like Kaepernick, Newton is the pick.

i'm guessing he got tagged...one of the RFA tags.

I don't think we let him walk. We might be hoping to match an offer and trade him.

I think there is a gentleman's agreement with DW. He probably expressed concern that being tagged for a year would dramatically decrease the amount he could earn negotiating a 4 year deal with a team. At 29 years of age, teams don't give lucrative deals to free agent RBs when 30 is like a car turning 100,000 miles. At 28 he is considered at the end of his prime.

DeAngelo's injury history over the past 2 years will hurt him, considering the fact that he was splitting time with Stewart (a fact that could help him).

On the other hand, the Panthers are probably wondering if the wheels are coming off DW, and should they pay nearly $10 million for the services of a part-time back who has not finished a season since 2008.

If it were me, I would tag Kalil and begin negotiations immediately, offer CJ a 5 year deal worth about $40-50 million, and sign and trade DW. I would tell DW's agent that we will not tag him, but we will sign him to a contract he likes and trade him. Both sides win. DW gets a long contract (the Panthers should have an idea what other teams would be willing to pay) and the Panthers get something for DW.

Do not be surprised to see us draft a solid center. I don't like Bernadeau as a backup and Kalil could play out the tag and leave in 2012. Regardless, a quality player who can backup at G too would be smart. That, Mr. Hurney, would be planning ahead, something you failed to do successfully at WR, QB, and DT.

I can go with Arizona wanting him badly but your price tag is steep. Almost as bad as New Orleans trading their entire draft for Ricky Williams.

If we make this trade it will be either the greatest trade in our history or the worst.

We all would be $HITTIN Bricks if Cam Newton became a superstar and we let him go.

Guess we shall see.

Oh yeah. The Panthers decided to trade Steve Smith--Rivera wanted him out and SS wanted to go. They are given the 60th overall pick (New England) in a trade. They are also trading Deangelo Williams to the Dolphins for their third rounder and a conditional pick no lower than a third rounder in 2012.

I don't this scenario is that far fetched. Last year was not a rebuilding year, it was a CBA year. As a fan I am prepared for a true rebuilding year this year, especially with a first year coach who will get a 100% bye on the 2011 season (all Fox's fault etc...)

I would not be devastated if we lost those two guys

Smart fans see this, emotional fans don't. I try to look at things from every possible perspecitve, but emotions win out, unfortunately. Losing Smith would hurt in the short term, but if it empowers us to take Green, a player who has the potential to be great and improve the QB position, by giving us an additional draft pick, then do it. Do we have a shot at the Super Bowl in 2011? Doubtful. But if we make a few trades, we can position ourselves to be young and solid for a long time.

Very good point about the rebuilding year. 2010 was a wasted year. Not a lot of positives came from it. We weren't building because our coaches were terminal. We survived. I think we start to turn the corner in 2011, but 2012 should be fun.

It still would be the worst trade in history especially in this draft.

This is coming from a guy that has pimped Cam Newton tirelessly on this board.

Just don't think anyone would make that trade. Frankly Andrew Luck wouldn't be worth that much. Not saying it hasn't happened before or won't happen again and it wasn't a shot at you personally.

I didn't take it personally, but I appreciate your concern in that regard. I agree with you. If the Panthers don't want Cam, there are going to be teams that do. According to some report I read on another thread (I think), 6 teams have him the #1 player on their board. If they fall in love with him, and some will, we could get a deal. Last year there was concern that Bradford was not worth the pick. But not many first picks get traded. I would think we would have to sweeten the pot a bit, but maybe not.

It's funny how non Cam Newton fans can make sense out of other teams falling in love with Cam and doing whatever it takes to trade up and get him, but can't make sense out of us falling in love with Cam and taking him with the number 1 pick. And on top of that the Panthers need a QB worse than any other team in the league.
