Hypothetical trade scenario

Although it seems almost probable that Steve Smith will not fit into future plans and that the Smith wants to play for a contender....it makes me sick to think we would trade him. He's worth more than most 2nd round picks and noboday would trade more than a 3rd for him. I really hope that Rivera and Smith can find common ground.

Losing Williams is almost a given at this point. I hate this almost as much as the thought of losing Smith. The fact that we have Stewart make it tolerable, but I hate it too. Until Davis ran for the Panthers, we never really had a quality RB. Now we have 2 of the best in the league and to see either go, worries me. I remember back when the Panthers couldn't get a 3 yard run if their life depended on it, because they didn't have the RB to make it happen. I would hate to go back to those days.

Well, I'll voice my issues with the scenario then I'll play along. First, I also don't think we'd get that much to move down to the 5th this year. The value chart isn't that concrete. The NY-SD trade has crossed my mind recently as a precedent to use but I think the Giants were more in love with/desperate for Eli than Arizona or anyone will be in Cam. Second, I see little to no chance we trade Steve Smith. There has been no actual indication that he wants that. There has only been baseless speculation from the media quoting random league people who may or may not even have anything to do with the Panthers. Steve ain't going anywhere. Neither is DeAngelo. Ain't happening, and even if it did it wouldn't be a trade. He'd just sign elsewhere. And EVEN if we were able to do a sign and trade, we'd get more than two 3rds... Back to the draft pick trades, I think the trade could happen if you take out the 1st next year. Our #1 for their #5 + 2nd round + 3rd round.

On to the question at hand, IF they did make a huge mistake and trade Smitty, AJ Green is the pick. No question. Since we WOULDN'T trade Smitty or Deangelo, the #5 comes down to Green or Peterson (assuming you got the 4 picks before right). I still say we take Green, unless something about the evaluation process tells the FO Peterson is a significantly better prospect than Green. Smitty will be a Panther for the duration of his career, but that is only 3 or 4 more years probably. Better to get Green to complete our talented young WR corps. Let he and Smitty start (with Smitty sliding into the slot on 3 WR plays) and proceed to find greater success in our problem area - Offense and passing game in particular.

Also, I think Phil Taylor will be gone before our 3rd round pick. He's supposed to be the top NT in the draft. If we got Arizona's 2nd round pick, I've seen Kyle Rudolph go in most rounds in that range, he'd be a good pick there. If not Rudolph, Marvin Austin *might* last until our 3rd round pick, but grabbing him with #37 wouldn't be a bad pick. Local guy that probably woulda gone 1st round if not for the suspension. If it were to work out that we get Green at #5, Rudolph at #37, and Austin at #65, the rest of the draft can be mostly BPA. Maybe grab an O-lineman with #69 (good omen there, Gross's number) and Devlin or Kaepernick (or however you spell it) with our comp pick at the end of the 3rd. With our 4th we should take the top kicker. We're gonna need one, sooner rather than later.

Arizona wants Newton in the worst possible way. They see that Denver could trade with Miami, Washington, or Tennessee, and Buffalo or Cincinnati are likely to take Newton before the 5th pick. So they decide to trade up to assure them of getting Newton. They call Marty, still sensitive about getting horse-laughed for trading up for a small school QB exactly a year earlier. "Marty, we would like to trade up. We offer you our first (5th overall), our second (35th overall) and third (66th overall) rounders and our first rounder in 2012. (That is about equal trade value when compared to previous years and the commonly accepted trade chart)."

Marty makes the trade.

Now we have the 5th pick. Newton goes first, then Fairley, then Bowers, then a surprise-Quinn fourth.

The Panthers are on the clock. The Panthers have the following high on their board: AJ Green, Patrick Peterson, Marcell Dareus, and Blaine Gabbert.

Oh yeah. The Panthers decided to trade Steve Smith--Rivera wanted him out and SS wanted to go. They are given the 60th overall pick (New England) in a trade. They are also trading Deangelo Williams to the Dolphins for their third rounder and a conditional pick no lower than a third rounder in 2012.

Who would you pick?

I would pick Cam Newton number one overall. And tell Arizona I can't make that trade because it wouldn't be fair to you. That would be the worst trade Arizona ever made.

I have been pimping Cam Newton like crazy on this board. If we had the 5th pick and somebody said we are trading our 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and next years 1st to get Newton. I wouldn't say a word and just slap that person across the face.

But for the sake of the thread, I would probably go Green. Especially if Smith is gone. Pick up a DT at 35th (possibly Austin), after that I would use nearly every pick left on offense (maybe a CB somewhere there is usually decent value late at that position), try to convince Moore to a short term contract, and hope Clausen progresses or that a strong QB class comes through next year.

But we need to pick Newton.

i would pick green in that scenario and we wouldn't have to trade smith away for that.

we had by far the worst offense in the league. it doesn't make sense to follow that with drafting a defensive guy.

i would go out and try to find some young vet QB or two with experience and let them compete with jimmy (and maybe moore if we kept him around) for the starting gig. with any luck we'll find our franchise guy among those guys. if not then we'll probably be back in the top 5 again next year and we'll draft either luck or barkley.
