Are you going to give up on Newton if he struggles (as almost all rookie QBs do) the way you did Claussen? Then what?

Clausen was never going to keep the Panthers from drafting Luck, so why should he keep us from drafting Newton? If he can't handle the competition, then he's not the right guy anyway. There is no law that says we can't still root for Clausen, regardless of what the Panthers do either, so for me anyway, hate has nothing to do with it.

With Luck, there was minimal risk. It is like betting $55 million on Duke to beat Western Carolina in basketball. With Newton, there is a lot of risk. His IQ, mechanics, character. It is like betting $55 million on Duke to beat Ohio State in basketball. Then you have to wonder if Newton's dad convinced Ohio State to throw the game.

I see Luck as a great QB who should go down as one of the greatest in history. I see Newton being anything from a Culpepper / Big Ben type to a Jamarcus Russell / Ryan Leaf type.

To answer your question from my perspective it is about the $$$ a first overall pick would cost.

But do you spend a #1 overall pick on competition or is he the QB of the future? I don't feel you spend the highest pick in the draft on competition. IF we take A QB number 1 Jimmy is gone.

Not entirely true - it basically signifies the team is no longer planning around Clausen at all, but he still has the opportunity to win his a spot in training camp possibly, even starter. He'd no longer be the franchise guy though. (Franchise, in this context, being the guy the team is building around, not the "elite super awesome QB" that a lot of people use it to mean)

If he's a little bit better who wins? Their would be a overwhelming move 2 make this pick the face of the franchise not Jimmy. JMO if this happens you might as well trade Jimmy. The writing would be on the wall "We have no faith in you Jimmy so we took this higher draftee 2 take your place".

well Brees got injured or who knows what would have happened, either way, Brees did get a bit of play time in still and really impressed people and he and the Chargers were probably better for it..

honestly if Jimmy could show in camp and next year that he is a great quarterback and worth building around, who knows what happens to a rookie we draft.

It obviously decreases the likelihood of Jimmy doing well here long term but it doesn't eliminate it entirely.

Even if Jimmy knows this he will still be highly motivated because he will be auditioning for other teams. he won't phone it in and quit he will play as well as he can to keep his career alive.

That is EXACTLY what happened with Brees when Chargers drafted Rivers. After that all the sudden Brees started balling.

I'll say this is historically true, but signs sorta point away from that this year. Hurney has said that when you're drafting high, you need to draft an impact position. Rivera has said that we're gonna draft based on our biggest need. If we are to trust anything these guys have said, we have to conclude that our generic BPA strategy is not gonna be used this year at least for 1st overall. For the first time in years, I think it's reasonable to say that Peterson and Green for example are the BPA's, but they'll still draft Fairley or Newton instead. Not sure I'm comfortable with all that.

part of why I'm not quite as down on everyone mocking us to take Bowers is specifically because of some of Hurney's "impact player" comments.

Luckily for us, there are other impact players in the draft... who actually fill bigger needs.

A word of warning, though. If we franchise Kalil like everyone in the media expects, I do wonder how likely we are to retain Johnson...
