Will My Company Lay Off People?

I work for a company that has been really slow for the past 4 months. A couple of weeks ago we were told that our entire department would no longer exist. Instead of laying off people, my company decided to shift us to another department. This sounded fine until I went through our work responsibilities. (My last position required a month of training, this new job took me half a day to understand). It seems that this job would be perfect for entry level people. But most of the people in my department are making in the high 30s. There is a huge back load of work in this new department. But my question is, once we get done with the back load will they start laying people off? Or are they just hoping that enough people leave on their own, that they don't have to lay people off?

Layoffs always start with attrition. So yeah they are going to see who leaves naturally.

Once that process sees its way through then the layoffs begin.

Position yourself so that you are one of the keepers if you can.

Otherwise don't worry about it

I'll probably wait for the lay offs. I'm going to be a stay at home dad in a few months anyway. But it kind of puts me in an ethical dilemma. If I get layed off should I collect unemployment even though I wasn't going to work anyway? That will be a tough call.
