Clausen poised for improvement?

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Clausen's biggest hurdle, in my opinion, is his height and small hands - two obviously related problems. There's not much he can do about the small hands, just work on his hand strength/grip. The height thing is easier to overcome, probably just an extra step in his drop. It's not like he's 5'10 or something, 6'1 is only a little shorter than average. I think he's fine between the ears (besides the skittish thing, that'll get worked out with experience and trust in the O-line).

People who want to crucify Clausen and laugh at the concept of bringing in a 35 year old veteran really show football ignorance. They suggest that we should go after a franchise QB. Well, Duh.

The others who think Newton is the answer are the reason telemarketers still have jobs.

Newton is talented, but are you willing to put all our chips on him? I think he has about a 30% chance of being a stud and a 70% chance of being a Vince Young at best.

Rebuild the team, and then insert QB. It is not done any other way.

Not many teams would consider a second rounder for a quality backup QB a wasted pick either.

Nice to see the positive comments about Clausen. He will be OK. Never a superstar, but he might turn out to be a Jake D-caliber player.

Expect Clausen to step up in 2011. The offensive scheme was designed with Jake in mind. Moore could play it, so little was changed. Then Clausen takes over, and the system is not good for a player who did not take first team reps in camp. Involved too many post-snap reads with few passing options. The OL was terrible/injured and the WRs were learning too. How can you legitimately expect third and sixth round WRs to step in when it takes first rounders a year or two to develop? Double team SS and put 8 in the box. Blitz seven or eight every play over the right side (Bernadeau, Schwartz, Williams). Clausen never had a chance.

But some will compare him to Sanchez whose numbers were not much better and who played behind a stud OL.

Clausen needs a year to get his Mojo back, but all of the "Panther fans" who criticize him probably

1) never played QB

2) do not know football

3) blame the QB for offensive woes because they do not understand the game enough to blame the responsible parties

4) Like to kick people when they are down and probably are the same type of people who talk behind people's backs while kissing their butts when around them

5) Think you know more than coaches and GMs

6) Do not care that they are contributing to a pool of negative energy that could eventually prove too much for a 22 year old kid to handle, thus eliminating any chance he has for success and causing his downfall so you can tell everyone "Told ya."

7) Will cheer for #2 when he steps up and becomes the franchise QB, forgetting all about your attacks and put downs as you shop for a black Clausen Jersey to wear to the home playoff game.

somebody correct me if im wrong, but dont nfl qbs have mics in there helment?if they do who to say the oc is not telling the qb what to look for in different looks on the defense.

and to say cam would miss on short passes when 8 in the box is retarded. at least the pass would not get tipped at the line.

Freeman threw like 17 interceptions in his game against us that year. He looked HORRIBLE his rookie year. Same thing for Sanchez. Sanchez had a QB rating of 63, Freeman 59 in their rookie year. That's not much better than Clausen (judging from a statistical/concrete perspective)...

but they showed some progression there rookie years unlike clausen. freeman dinked and dunked us when they played in carolina but threw 5 picks. sanchez threw 1 or 2 picks but still was not scared to throw into coverage.jimmy is scary.

I really think Clausen has a 1% chance of being good.

30% > 1 %

Vince Young >>>> Clausen

And yeah, we should go after a franchise QB duh.

There is a point where communication is cut off. I think the first 10 seconds of the play clock or something like that.

Freeman was allowed to show progression by his coaches, Jimmy wasn't. Sanchez didn't show any progression til year 2 when they started letting him throw real NFL passes. Rex Ryan said as much when he (or one of his coaches, I forget which) said they had to dumb down and color code the playbook for Sanchez in year 1.

I don't have any facts or stats to back up my opinion on Freeman's rookie season, but it's just the feeling I got watching the games - and I watched every Bucs game, one of my good friends where I was stationed that year (and the only one I went to the bar to watch football every Sunday with) was a Bucs fan. He felt no hope for Freeman and Coach Morris after that first season, just like we are with Clausen. He's glad he was wrong. We may be, too. Might not, Clausen might show ZERO improvement, we won't know for another 6 or 7 months. I'm hoping for the former, so we can use that first round pick on another impact player, like AJ Green.

And since you are so wise in math, perhaps you could share with everyone where we are to find a franchise QB? You might not want to post it here because a dozen teams (Arizona, Buffalo, Oakland, SF, Tennessee, Washington, Minnesota, Cleveland, Kansas City, Miami, Seattle, and Jacksonville) might steal your formula.

1%--if that were true, he would not be on the team. You, being an obvious math wizard, should be able to calculate the feasiblity of retaining a player with a 1 in 100 chance of success when there is a limited amount of cap space and only 53 roster spots.

Cam Newton might be the real deal. However, his risk factor is too high to spend the first overall pick on him. Are you interested in

he felt no hope but everyone else seen potential in josh freeman. freeman did beat a hot NO that later won the super bowl. all tho sanchez struggled at times when it was time to make plays he did. remember he has went 2 staright afc championship games.

now jimmy never progressed over the year. i had a lot of hope for jimmy, but he just didnt look like he belonged on the field as a pro. he will have to make some major strides to see the field next year.MAJOR.

Are you interested in paying him and his father $55 million guaranteed for 4 years when he will take 2 years to develop? IF he successfully makes the transition, that comes to $27.5 million per season, more than Manning and Brady. Really? If the Packers profits dropped from $23 million to $9 million in 4 years (only public info available) what do you think a Newton bust would cost the Panthers? It could ruin the franchise. I am not interested in spending that much on a 1-year wonder with cognitive (ran a simple, 1 read offense and waited for his coach to call the play from the sideline after defense lined up) and character concerns (cheating on tests, possession of stolen merchandise, etc.)

AND 30% may be > than 1%, but first overall pick is 100 X more expensive than 48th pick.

Yet people keep bringing up his father. as much as you bash VY the guy was 30-17 as a starter. the league is evolving again and its not about statues in the pocket anymore.

he felt no hope but everyone else seen potential in josh freeman. --Not true. I played college football and have been an NFL fan for 30 years--I know what variables can ruin a qbs' chance of success. Do you? If so, what are they?

sanchez struggled at times when it was time to make plays he did. remember he has went 2 staright afc championship games.

How many starting offensive linemen did he have who were injured? How many rookie WRs? Did you know that Sanchez had 15 potential interceptions DROPPED this year (twice as many as any other QB)? Add that to his 13 interceptions...Did Clausen have weapons like Edwards, Moss, Cotchery, Green, Tomlinson, Keller? Ferguson and Mangold on the OL....

jimmy never progressed over the year

Jimmy's QB rating improved as the year progressed as injuries mounted. Defenses learned early on how to double Smith and put 7 in the box. Blitz on the Schwartz/Williams/Bernadeau sides. Stunt to confuse the young, reserve, OL. Pin your ears back and go. The offense was designed for a veteran QB (Jake) and Davidson struggled to adjust. What is the difference? Chemistry with WRs, timing, post-snap reads vs. pre-snap reads, etc.

So uh... on the subject of Pickles.

I sure hope he does improve. If, heaven forbid, we don't draft Cam then we are going to really need him to step up and be ten times the quarterback he was this past season.

I have seen very little in regards to redeeming qualities of Pickles, but at least he tries to take care of the football. Maybe he will develop under a new coaching regime, but I am not going to count on it and I dearly hope that we get at least another young quarterback to develop who shows more promise and/or who has a different skill set (not Tony Pike who needs to go to the PS). One player I liked (even though we beat him when he started against us it seemed to me like he was tearing us apart) is Josh Johnson of the Bucs. They don't need him and we could probably get him for cheap provided we can get away with breaking the old "don't trade within your division" principle.
