Clausen poised for improvement?

Newton would have been FAR worse than Clausen last year. Newton's got a good long ball, but his short stuff is awful. And the speed of the average NFL Linebacker would cure him of his desire to run really quick.

There is some truth here but I do not agree with the idea that Cam Newton will be ineffective as a runner in the NFL because of the big bad linebackers.

He is bigger and faster than the average linebacker in the NFL. Even if they catch him the still have to worry about wrapping and actually tackling him (unlike Vick).

He likely won't have 200 yards rushing in a game but he will have a lot of 60-70 yards games and he will be hell on third and short and goal line situations.

My God, just taking a snap or executing a hand off cleanly would be an improvement.

Clausen will get his chance to show what he can do. It will be interesting to see who we pick up in the draft or FA for competition. That will give us a good look at what the coaches think we need at QB. I also am looking forward to seeing whether we tailor the offense and put in a package for each QB or install the offense and make the QBs execute the offense as it is scripted. For example will be throw it down the field and pick the best guy who can do that, or will we stick with small and intermediate throws because that is what might best suit a guy like Clausen.

It isn't as if we won't do both, but if Clausen is the chosen one, we will tailor the offense to feature him. If he is just one of three candidates, and for example the others can throw the deep ball better, we might see who can run the vertical offense the best even if it isn't Clausen.

How were Clausen's short throws any better? Also, Cam is faster and bigger than the average NFL LBer and I've seen him fake a few CB's out of their shorts, so I wouldn't worry about that part at all. That doesn't mean he needs to run all the time either, because he's a very good passer.

LOL, it's not that much of an exaggeration. JC definitely fumbled a lot of snaps in a short period of time. Also, he can't pump fake with those small hands...never underestimate the power of a good pump fake. Big Ben uses them to manipulate defenses all the time.

If Big Ben can be an effective runner, then Cam can definitely do it.

And BTW, Cam's accuracy on those short throws can easily be fixed because they are just small mechanical issues. He does not need to fix his throwing motion, which is much more difficult, like The Golden Calf of Bristol did.

And he gained 60+ yards rushing on them even with a couple of sacks. If they missed a couple of tackles he is over 100. So thanks for helping my point.

Considering The Golden Calf of Bristol this year was a VERY productive runner and he is not quite as big, he is slower, and a heck of a lot less shifty than Cam Newton.

Yet in Tebows three starts this season he ran for 199 yards (66.3 ypg) and had 3 TD's rushing. Stretch that out across and entire season The Golden Calf of Bristol runs for 1,061 yards and 16 TD's rushing.

Sounds pretty effective to me for a guy who isn't nearly as good a runner as Cam Newton.

Your are correct about this and many people didn't give Delhomme the cred he deserved for using the pump fake. Nether Moore nor Clausen used the pump fake with success last year.

Big Ben was not very accurate when he came into the leauge and prob was one of the wost SB QBs IMO. Still he has become over the years a very good QB. I would not expect leaps and bounds out of Newton early either. Still his mobility will keep him in games and he will make some plays other QBs just cant make.

Right now most Defenses dont use the old school 295 lb linebacker like they use too. Newton will not be able to run over them like he did in college but he will not be frail either. He will win most QB sneaks and will lay out some SS with his 250 lb body.

Dude runs the same 40 as LT at 50 more lbs. To try to convince yourself that will not be a advantage is just being stubborn.
