You are right that he didn't say it, the quote from the article was not from his coach, but he tended to agree with it and say the way you make up for that is with athleticism and making plays with your feet but not running the ball.

doesn't mean he can't read them, just that he didn't have to do too much there because of what the defenses were doing.

anyways, a QB can know where he wants to go before the ball is snapped and can do that also very quickly afterwards if you know where all your guys are supposed to be at any point because of the play that was called and who has the best matchups. a quick check to make sure that the guy isn't covered and you get the ball to him.

just because you can't see him going through progressions in the pocket doesn't mean he didn't make the reads and know ahead of time where he wanted the ball to go and it isn't a bad thing for him to know where he wants it to go early either. a little bit of misdirection or making the defense think you are going to start running or handing the ball off should be just enough time for your intended target to get the break in coverage he needed.

You better believe that NFC South defense wouldn't be defending Cam Newton the same way they defend JC either. Right now, they all know they just need to stack the box and stop the run because the Panthers can't hurt them with the pass. If they have to start accounting for the QB though, it will open things up in the running and passing games.

How in the hell do you figure that Newton is a less polished passer than Clausen. Are you on crack? Clausen was the worst passer in the entire NFL, and that's not just compared to the other starters, that's compared to pretty much every QB that played in a game. The only way Cam will be worse, is if somebody feeds him a handful of Xanex before the game.

If they crowd the line and bring heat, they better get him. If eh breaks a tackle or get to the secondary he will be gone. Even in the NFL. His 40 time is faster than D-Will's, he is bigger than any linebacker on our roster, and he can change direction incredibly for anyone let alone a guy his size.

When they do only rush 4 there will have to be a linebacker spy so it takes one guy out of pass coverage.

The schemes will be the same but they will have to tweak it against Cam.

I guess I'm nuts then, because there is no doubt in my mind that Newton could have done better than Clausen did last year. He sure as hell couldn't do any worse. My God, just taking a snap or executing a hand off cleanly would be an improvement.

Newton would have been FAR worse than Clausen last year. Newton's got a good long ball, but his short stuff is awful. And the speed of the average NFL Linebacker would cure him of his desire to run really quick.

I think he can become a good NFL QB, but he has a lot of development first...

No one could have been worse than Clausen. Stats never lie and Clausen's were AWFUL.
