Clausen poised for improvement?

Mr. Scot

When Peete and Jake were here we weren't competing with Brees, Freeman, and Ryan either. You can no longer get by in this division with an average QB.

That doesn't mean that the QB issue absolutely has to be settled this season at all costs.

The team has more than one problem area, and there's no guarantee that they all get fixed this year. Even though some likely will get fixed immediately, new ones will arise for next year (they always do).

Fans who are expecting every single problem to get fixed in one season need to take a step back. There's a strong likelihood that won't happen. And if the team thinks it's better to give Clausen a year and look to next year's draft or FA if he fails, that's a perfectly viable strategy.

I didn't expect much from Rodney Peete either, but he served his purpose. Volek could fill a similar role.

If they were going to go the "Jake Delhomme" route, I'd be interested in Matt Flynn. Not much game type to go by but at least you know he's had good coaching.

Have said before and will say again, this is an awful year to need a quarterback.

So we sit around and hope that we can land a average quarterback until the next Luck comes out?

I'll take Newton over most of Rayzor's list, but he's still a huge risk, and I'd take Volek over any of them. Even if we do take Newton, do you really want him starting as a rookie with no one behind him? We still need someone like Volek either way.

If we get an average QB, we won't be drafting Luck next year. We'll be taking someone around #14.

I'd rather do that than reach for a guy at number one.

We have two diffrent mindsets here, but to me waiting around to catch lightning in a bottle is just as bad as drafting a bad one. Sure you can make the playoffs with a average player at the position but can you win? I can only think of one time(trent dilfer?) that the super bowl has been won with a decent qb. Even then that won't make you compete year in and year out as we've seen with jake.

What your suggesting is do the same thing the franchise has been doing since selecting kerry collins.

There are several problem areas but only one giant void. QB.

Again Clausen will be given a chance to succeed but he will have to do a complete overhaul of his mechanics if he is ever going to be an even serviceable starting QB.

Cam Newton has the potential to be a once in a lifetime type QB (that isn't hyperbole I truly believe that). But he also has a chance of being a bust.

Luck would have been a safer pick than Cam but I remain truly convinced that Cam's upside is higher than Luck's.

DT has a high value in later rounds, QB doesn't.

If we pass on Cam there is a very good chance that we will miss out on Cam and Luck and next year we will be in no better position with more questions about the QB's we would able to pick.

This could be the last best chance to get a QB that can be truly elite and prop up this organization for the next 15 years.

And if he busts, then what? Keep drafting QBs with our top pick until we get the right one?

If I'm taking a QB at number one, I want better odds.

ANYONE can bust. From Fairley, to Green, to Bowers, to even the great Luck. Any of these guys can bust.

As a matter of fact first round QB's fair better in regards to boom or busts than most positions.

What if we pass and get Fairley and he doesn't pan out. He gets overweight and injury prone?? Cam Newton becomes Mike Vick 2.0?? Then what? We keep ignoring the QB position??

My personal belief is that a bust for Cam Newton would him turning out to be a Randall Cunningham. Not a bad QB in my opinion.

But if he booms he could transcend the way we look at the QB position forever.

ya know, it is possible that next year, there could be a quarterback "worth taking" in the middle of the first. This year the only QBs there will be Locker and Mallett, and we don't have a pick there anyway. middle of the first QBs can still be franchise guys. so even if we are picking 14 next year, it's not like we can never get a good QB.

True. But if you guys are this worried about Cam Newton why would you wait until you have a QB with more questions and less upside?? Seems to me you would want the best prospect when you had a chance to get him.
