Clausen poised for improvement?

Mr. Scot

Your conservative mind set is exactly the reason the panthers are not an elite team right now. It falls in line with the fox theory of play it safe use the vets. You'd rather play stop-gap QBs instead of taking a chance on a franchise player. If the bucs went out and signed Billy volek instead of drafting freeman, maybe they wouldn't be where they are right now.

I'm all for drafting someone like luck but, sitting around waiting on the perfect QB is just as damaging to a franchise as Drafting one bust. You have to be in it to win it,Billy volek is just another nice way of saying jake, rodney,or vinny until the next stop gap. When does it end?

agreed with this 100%.

Having a real QB coach will do wonders.
it won't make clausen taller.

it won't make clausen more respectable in the huddle.

it won't make clausen more mature.

it won't make him act like a scared rabbit under pressure.

getting a QB coach worth a crap as well as a non sucky OC and coaching staff will help, but it won't do a whole lot to fix clausen's major problems...essentially his height and what's between his ears.

My verdict on Volek is the same as it's always been, that being that I'll go along with whatever Rivera thinks because he's in a way better position to judge than any of us.

We assume he'll want Volek because of system familiarity, but just because Rivera knows him doesn't mean he likes him.

If he does like him enough to offer him a contract and a shot at the starting spot, then I'll trust that decision till I see reason not to.

if they do bring volek in here he shouldn't be the starter. if they make him the starter, this would be the first thing that makes me doubt that this franchise is serious about becoming a dominant force in the league.

that would be a very john fox-type decision and exactly what richardson was trying to get this team away from. it's also one of those decisions that richardson would step in and say "do something else".

Who do you suggest we get instead? It's like free agency is awash with all star QBs.

I have said several times that I think Clausen is our starter from day one no matter who we draft (and that applies to Luck as well).

He will be given every opportunity to succeed for lots of reasons but at the very least they would want to generate some trade value for him. At the very best he becomes the next Troy Aikman and we would have to decide on what to do with Cam Newton.

I still think we draft Newton when it is all said and done.

Rivera's not Fox, and it'll take a lot more than his not drafting a QB for me to give up on him.

I'm not expecting perfection this season. Just improvement.

all of these options would be better than volek...

for competition: gradkowski, tarvaris jackson, grossman, thigpen, moore, alex smith, caleb hanie, maybe derek anderson

carrying the clipboard: pennington, bulger, josh mccown, seneca wallace

if volek is the only QB that is brought in this year, that would be very disheartening. i'm not expecting perfection either and they don't have to draft a QB this year, but they need to be bold and forward thinking with what they do. they have said a lot of things that makes me think that they are, but only bringing in volek would show a serious lack of balls.

this is something that i would really have a problem with and i totally believe that it would be a mistake. thats why i really can't see them doing it. it just doesn't make sense. it doesn't do anything to make the team better and more competitive. it doesn't do anything to help them better in the long term and that is exactly what they need to be doing right now.

Of that group, Tavaris Jackson is the only one I'd like to see. Just putting Smith and Grossman on a list shows how sad the options are right now. Hanie is no different from Volek. He has had very little actual action, it just occured on a big stage so suddenly he's a star. I wouldn't mind giving him a shot, but it's not like he has a history to instill confidence in anyone. At week 17 his career stats were 0-1 TD-INT, 66yds, 39.6 rating. Oooo!

I didn't expect much from Rodney Peete either, but he served his purpose. Volek could fill a similar role.

If they were going to go the "Jake Delhomme" route, I'd be interested in Matt Flynn. Not much game type to go by but at least you know he's had good coaching.

Have said before and will say again, this is an awful year to need a quarterback.

When Peete and Jake were here we weren't competing with Brees, Freeman, and Ryan either. You can no longer get by in this division with an average QB.

Exactly, If they were any good they wouldn't be in the free agency now would they? QB is the one place you don't fix in the free agency, I'm all for drafting a "potential" star like Newton. If you don't go that route, you can bring in a vet to mentor clausen but in no shape or form should he be fighting for a starting position.
