Clausen poised for improvement?

Not many teams would consider a second rounder for a quality backup QB a wasted pick either.

Nice to see the positive comments about Clausen. He will be OK. Never a superstar, but he might turn out to be a Jake D-caliber player.

Expect Clausen to step up in 2011. The offensive scheme was designed with Jake in mind. Moore could play it, so little was changed. Then Clausen takes over, and the system is not good for a player who did not take first team reps in camp. Involved too many post-snap reads with few passing options. The OL was terrible/injured and the WRs were learning too. How can you legitimately expect third and sixth round WRs to step in when it takes first rounders a year or two to develop? Double team SS and put 8 in the box. Blitz seven or eight every play over the right side (Bernadeau, Schwartz, Williams). Clausen never had a chance.

But some will compare him to Sanchez whose numbers were not much better and who played behind a stud OL.

Clausen needs a year to get his Mojo back, but all of the "Panther fans" who criticize him probably

1) never played QB

2) do not know football

3) blame the QB for offensive woes because they do not understand the game enough to blame the responsible parties

4) Like to kick people when they are down and probably are the same type of people who talk behind people's backs while kissing their butts when around them

5) Think you know more than coaches and GMs

6) Do not care that they are contributing to a pool of negative energy that could eventually prove too much for a 22 year old kid to handle, thus eliminating any chance he has for success and causing his downfall so you can tell everyone "Told ya."

7) Will cheer for #2 when he steps up and becomes the franchise QB, forgetting all about your attacks and put downs as you shop for a black Clausen Jersey to wear to the home playoff game.

how about actually have a mind of their own and are able to tell good play from bad play and aren't willing to turn a blind eye to it, but would rather call it for what it really is?

if he played better, he'd be liked better. if he ever gave us a reason to think he could be "the guy" he wouldn't be getting so much crap, but he did nothing to show anyone he could be the franchise QB. all anyone does is make excuses for him. "no one could do well in that situation" "it was the coaches fault" "it was the oline's fault" "he had rookie receivers" blah blah blah.

he sucked. if you can't see it or are willing to put up with more...good for you. if you are willing to believe that he can be better...good for you. truth is he looked horrible. he couldn't handle the job. he did nothing to make anyone truly feel confident in him. if you feel no confidence, why would you be acting as if he can turn it around.

like i said before, i hope the guy can turn it around. i hope he can do here what he did at ND each year, and that is grow exponentially. i just hav no reason to believe he can and until i see it, i won't believe it. until he shows improvement, i'm not going to be anticipating it and i sure don't feel like the team should be counting on it, but should actually be counting on it not happening and preparing for that by getting someone else in here.

i and many others actually want this team to get better and if we see a player playing like crap, we're going to call it what it is and want to get someone in here who doesn't. take that however you want.

I could forgive INT's, heck I expect rookies to throw INT's, but there has to be more positives to go with them than what JC showed us. As bad as Delhomme was in his last season here, he at least made some plays and sustained a few drives. I'm guessing that the only reason JC didn't throw more INT's was because he was afraid to throw it at all if the guy wasn't wide open.

He also was credited with 9 fumbles, but only 2 lost, so he was a little bit lucky too.

he felt no hope but everyone else seen potential in josh freeman. --Not true. I played college football and have been an NFL fan for 30 years--I know what variables can ruin a qbs' chance of success. Do you? If so, what are they?

sanchez struggled at times when it was time to make plays he did. remember he has went 2 staright afc championship games.

How many starting offensive linemen did he have who were injured? How many rookie WRs? Did you know that Sanchez had 15 potential interceptions DROPPED this year (twice as many as any other QB)? Add that to his 13 interceptions...Did Clausen have weapons like Edwards, Moss, Cotchery, Green, Tomlinson, Keller? Ferguson and Mangold on the OL....

jimmy never progressed over the year

Jimmy's QB rating improved as the year progressed as injuries mounted. Defenses learned early on how to double Smith and put 7 in the box. Blitz on the Schwartz/Williams/Bernadeau sides. Stunt to confuse the young, reserve, OL. Pin your ears back and go. The offense was designed for a veteran QB (Jake) and Davidson struggled to adjust. What is the difference? Chemistry with WRs, timing, post-snap reads vs. pre-snap reads, etc.

his game plan was simple , having a good running game is just two examples.both were there towards the end of the season and you playing college ball has poo to do with???????i bet my knowledge of the game is still larger than yours and im only 24.

it was not the ol fault all the time. he bailed on plays early, hardly took chances down field, and would do stupid stuff like throw the ball away on 4th down.not to mention he never stepped in the pocket and made a pass any were and never looked across the middle.il put ryan, jordan, jeff, travelle, smitty, double trouble, brandon, and david over that list you named from the jets.

the guy hardly made reads on his passes and barely went through his progressions. if his first read was covered or not naked open he would either check it down, bail out, or throw the ball away. the nfl qb should be able to put the ball on his guy even when covered.

Clausen very well could improve. The problem is that he could improve dramatically and still suck.

The Billy Volek supporters are hella annoying. Why should we waste time and money on a guy who has never done sh*t in the league? I'd rather give Jimmy one more chance with a good coaching staff to see what we really have with him instead of some wash up QB who is no better than Matt Moore. Volek would just be setting us back even more, at least if we start Jimmy in the new system we'll have no more questions about him.

Im all for Volek as long as he is gone in two year to make way for Newton or Clausen.

I've said I'd like to have Volek.

My goal wasn't to have him in here as some kind of quarterback for the long term and perhaps not even starting.

Having Volek here would be so that whoever our young QB is we're bringing along, be it Clausen, Pike, a rookie, some FA... if for some reason they aren't doing as well as you'd hope in training camp, we have a veteran who we know has experience in the system we're going to run. He's not going to be your long term starter but if things fall through with your young guys or they're taking longer to grasp the offense, we don't need to chuck them out there right away...

The main reason Volek gets brought up is the coaching staff connection.
