Rivera says we will draft # 1 pick based on biggest need and we will use the tag

I think that QB's that run the spread offense struggle with making the necessary throws you need to make in the NFL (Alex Smith, David Carr, Vince Young). I would rather us draft Fairley or Green because they can step in right away and make things happen. I would like for us to bring in a vet QB to compete with Clausen for the starting job and to be a teacher for him. We have no veteran leadership at the QB position and bringing in Newton without that leadership doesn't make sense. He will be in the same boat Clausen was in last year, Clausen was not ready and didn't have that vet to give him tips and encouragement.

Aren't you the same guy who claimed that you don't even watch Div. 1 football because they don't have a play off like the FCS does? Huh, Mr. Duke fan?

like big ben or sammy b.fail.

For every spread offense QB you name that made it, I can name a dozen who didn't(Jerry Tagge, Rich Campbell, Todd Blackledge, Kelly Stouffer, Andre Ware, David Klingler, Heath Shuler, Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Cade McNown) these were all spread offense QB's that were drafted in the first round that failed. I didn't say they all failed, there is an exception to every rule.

Didn't I tell you I was a PSL owner and love football? I understand the game, you don't have to be a fan of college football to know what players are good and what your team needs.

Theres nothing wrong with deciding such things from other peoples opinions alone, hell, it's what most of us use as at least a part of how we figure things out, but I readily admit the fact I haven't seen much of a lot of players makes me unfit to truly decide how good they are.

Plus, none of us ever get to sit in on the interviews which can mean so much in narrowing down prospects...

If you don't watch college football, how are you determining what players are good? Hype? Scouts alone? Highlight reels?

Did you watch a game that Gabbert played in? What about Cameron Jordan? How about Prince Amukamara or Von Miller? It would be really difficult to watch games that all the players that will be taken in the first round played in, right? So we all use what scouts say, or highlights we see and I never said I didn't watch any college football, I said I don't make it a priority because I don't like that there isn't a playoff system. I went to my first college football game ever last season, down in Columbia when Alabama came to town but I much prefer college basketball over college football. On the other hand I prefer NFL over the NBA but that doesn't mean I never watch an NBA game.

Yes but if you look at history and what spread QB's have done in the NFL that will tell you something. Hell Newton could come into the league and be one hell of a QB and be a pro bowler, I just think it is too big of a risk to take with the 1st overall pick seeing as how spread QB's have done in the past.

Well personally, I watched quite a few of Cam Newton's games, and I'm telling you that it's more than just the numbers with him. That entire team was much much better with him at QB. Fairley had no chance to win a NC without Cam Newton, but Newton could most definitely have done it without Fairley.

I watched the 2009 Aurburn team struggle to beat North freakin western in their bowl game, and they would have lost if the opponent's kicker wouldn't have gotten hurt, forcing them to go for a TD instead of the winning FG. I don't remember Fairley doing anything special in that game either.

1) I've seen like 9 or so games from Gabbert, with most coming this season... I kinda like Mizzou due to a family connection.

2) Because I see Big 12 games I have indeed seen Prince Amukamara play, enough to think he's good but not enough to say how he compares to Peterson.

3) I've seen enough of Von Miller to know he's a freaking beast :P

4) I've not seen one bit of Cameron Jordan.

I don't give opinions on guys I haven't seen anything of. When I've only seen limited play, I try to augment it with other things, but I also try not to make absolutes about any college player. I don't have the film scouts do so I can't break it down like they can.

True enough you didn't say you don't watch it, just not a fan. That's fine, my misunderstanding!

That is fine but the college game is so much different from the pro game. Great college players don't always turn out to be great pro players, it is just a different type of game.

Not a problem, monstercat is just a tarheel fan that wants to stir things up. I do watch some college football I just don't follow it that closely because I am not a fan of all the bowl games, but I love football and I love my Panthers. To me Fairley, Green, or Peterson are the safer bets and our biggest need is DT so that is why I think Fairley. I am not saying I don't like Newton, I think he is a wonderful athlete it just scares me taking him at #1.
