Rivera says we will draft # 1 pick based on biggest need and we will use the tag

would rather pick up a vet. chud knows volek pretty good. could see that happening.

I'm sure we will sign a veteran QB as insurance because I doubt Cam starts as a rookie. Either way the situation is this: we HAVE to address the QB position and if we don't this year we'll be forced to spend a ton of picks to move up next year and take one. Why not do it now?

Believe me, if I didn't think Newton was capable of being the guy I wouldn't be behind him as our pick. I wouldn't sh** on Blaine Gabbert with the 1st overall pick. Or Jake Locker OR Ryan Mallet. Everything I've watched and read on Newton has lead me to the conclusion that he's got all the tools (physical AND mental) to develop into a stud NFL QB. Will he be ready from day one? No, but what's more important, winning in 2011 or winning long-term?

I truly believe Cam Newton gives us the best chance to finally solidify the QB position for the next decade to come. He's got so much more potential than any other prospect in this draft it's insane. Why not take the player who has the highest ceiling?

Sounds like somebody actually knows a little something about the military.

I'd go with Gunny, for two reasons:

1. Signifies the best, toughest and most disciplined with a title only Marines carry.

2. Blue collar guy doesn't fit the officer profile to me, seems more like a staff NCO.

And all this about Moore coming back, the only way I see Moore coming back is if we DON'T draft any QBs this year. Clausen is coming back, there's no doubt about that.

Best case scenario (in the situation of us drafting a QB this year too) we run into the San Diego scenario from a while back and handle it better than them and actually get something for our Brees (Clausen). Worst case scenario we cut Clausen next year or the next and the backup we kept was slightly less good than the backup we cut this year (Moore).

If we don't draft a QB this year, we keep Clausen, sign Moore to a 1 or 2 year contract, and sign a vet to mentor both of them. In my opinion, Clausen needs less mentoring than Moore. At least Clausen had an excuse, he's a rookie. Moore had multiple chances, did well with the chance at the end of '09 and then crapped away all his progress this year. He couldn't handle the success and proved he isn't up to the task of improving. He blew his shot. Clausen should get another shot with the new system and coaches.

If we do draft a QB, we keep the rookie, Clausen, and sign a vet to mentor both of them.

I don't think Clausen's faults are unfixable, by the way. Some have mentioned arm strength, I don't think that was really a problem. True, he didn't exactly show progress over the course of the year but I think at minimum equal blame for that falls on the coaching. Without proper position coaching and playcalling in games, he ISN'T GOING to show progress. In my opinion he deserves at least 1 more year to call him a waste of a pick. I certainly don't think we go into this season with nothing better than Clausen/Pike/Moore on the roster, but Clausen deserves a shot and Pike deserves a practice squad spot, to give him a chance to hit the weights HARD and earn a spot on the team. Pike has Cantwell written all over him (in terms of career, not QB qualities obviously).

Gotta say, QB has to be considered our biggest need at the moment.

Two things...

First, Kudos I agree this is something very imporant that needed to be seperated out.

Two, QB is NOT our greatest need, STARTING QB may be our greatest need. There isnt one draft pick that is ready to start at QB

Newton is not worth the #1 pick, no QB in the draft is. We will not draft a QB unless we trade down, as of right now the pick has to be Fairley.

If we don't trade down for a QB or take one #1 even, the pick has to be BPA. In my opinion that's Green (or possibly Peterson, but I prefer Green). Definitely not Fairley and probably not Bowers. If we draft a DT high, it should be after a trade down of a few spots and take Dareus.

What makes a QB worth #1 overall? About the only thing Newton is lacking is that he didn't play in a pro style scheme (which he did at Blinn and besides didn't seem to hurt McCoy last year) and a lack of exp (which can't really be argued but his 1st year as a starter in a new scheme he went undeafted and one not only the Heisman but the NC as well).

The whole situation with his dad is a none issue to me because A: He will be payed to play in the NFL anyway (assuming the rumors were true) and B: It was his dad not him looking for money (allegedly). Even if he knew about it, it was his Dad and I don't know about you but my dad has led me into some stupid decisions before because he is my Father (and thinks he knows it all). The whole laptop thing was blown way out of proportion (he didn't steal he bought it and then paniced when confronted about) and was when he was a teenager and he has shown nothing but respect for the law since then.

Everything you here from his coaches and teammates at both Blinn and Auburn make him sound like he is the 2nd coming of The Golden Calf of Bristol (LOL). He works harder then anyone and is a charismatic leader that everyone loves. He has handle all the drama of this season with absolute class and grace.

I'm not going to be upset if we pass on him but he is just as much worth the #1 pick as Fairley, Green, Bowers, Peterson, and especially Gabbert.

I think that QB's that run the spread offense struggle with making the necessary throws you need to make in the NFL (Alex Smith, David Carr, Vince Young). I would rather us draft Fairley or Green because they can step in right away and make things happen. I would like for us to bring in a vet QB to compete with Clausen for the starting job and to be a teacher for him. We have no veteran leadership at the QB position and bringing in Newton without that leadership doesn't make sense. He will be in the same boat Clausen was in last year, Clausen was not ready and didn't have that vet to give him tips and encouragement.
