fwiw, draftcountdown had us taking bowers at #1 overall as well.

The decision by Stanford QB Andrew Luck to stay in school another year rather than enter the 2011 NFL Draft definitely threw a monkey-wrench in the Panthers plans, as he would have undoubtedly been the top pick. Now Carolina must go back to the drawing board. There will be a handful of prospects in contention for the honor of going #1 but the new head coach Ron Rivera is a defensive-minded guy and he will most likely want to use this choice to land an impact presence on that side of the ball. Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers was the #1 recruit in the entire country coming out of high school and finally turned that talent and potential into production as a junior, leading the nation in sacks. Bowers, who is a better pro prospect coming out of college than Gaines Adams was, will face inevitable comparisons to Julius Peppers if he is indeed the Panthers choice. daquanbowers.jpg That might be a bit optimistic but Bowers certainly has the talent to be a double-digit sack artist at the next level. Even though defensive tackle is arguably a more pressing need, Bowers gets the slight edge over Auburn’s Nick Fairley because he plays a premium position and has fewer questions marks off the field. Georgia WR A.J. Green could garner consideration as well but after adding Brandon LaFell, Armanti Edwards and David Gettis last year to go along with vet Steve Smith the Panthers might not consider wideout to be a particularly pressing need.

Panthers won't go DE for the first pick. they feel good about their DEs, despite the lack of sacks and QB pressures last year. problem wasn't the DEs, it was the DT. they got no interior push. it was weak all year and has been weak since they traded jenkins away and kemo got hurt. adding bowers wouldn't help. much more likely they go after fairley or even dareus.

also, CB will be a bigger need as well than DE. they will most definitely be losing richard marshall and that pretty much leaves gamble (who lost his mojo according to rivera who said he was going to try and help him get it back) and captain munnerlynn. they will have to address CB. peterson will also be the pick before bowers is.

i would even say they might take a chance on newton if he impresses. i have heard that he is one of the guys on the short list they are strongly considering with that first pick. you are right in having newton be the first QB off the board and that he won't make it out of the top 5, but he could actually be the #1 overall. too much attention is paid to rivera being a defensive head coach in this draft. he has said that the defense is essentially in good shape with the exception of DT. he is focusing most of his attention on improving the offense of which, according to rivera, QB and TE is the priority. marty hurney has also said the most important thing is improving at QB.

some say they might address it with a stop gap QB and work with what they have. this is a team that realizes that the game is changing and that they have largely neglected the QB position while fox was here. they see the QB talent in the division and realize they are well behind. while they did say they were going to give clausen a shot, they said they were going to bring in competition. if luck was in the draft they would have for sure drafted him. just because he isn't doesn't mean they won't draft a QB then if they think the upside is high enough and have enough faith on the coaching staff to make sure he's ready. only QB worth using a #1 or even top 5 pick on is newton.

also, bowers might not even be going to the combine due to him having surgery after the season...not sure how he's going to pull off the #1 like that. imo, you and too many other people pay too much attention to the peppers pick in '02 and bowers being local. anytime i see someone pick bowers i see it as a lazy pick by someone who hasn't actually done their research on what the team actually needs. better luck next time.

so catman 72 how many wins did all that production get you guys this year? peppers and the bears went to the nfc title game in case you missed and they also beat your panthers playing possibly the worst qb to take a snap in the nfl this year in todd collins. well since claussen plays for you guys make that 2nd worst qb. peppers is better than anybody you guys have or ever will,I know your bitter he left but get over it!

In addition to his huge cap number and his declining skill set, here’s another “fun fact” about Peppers that you are just of the cusp of realizing: He has a penchant for going MIA in big games.

You can argue that people game-plan against him but people game-planned against Reggie White and rarely shut him down the way teams seem to be able to shut Peppers down when it counts most… just saying.

You mention the game he played against the Panthers, other than the one play he made on a screen pass that was thrown right into his chest, what did his stat line look like? I was at that game and for a guy that was so fired up to come back and kick our butt, he didn’t produce very much did he?

We got all the best years of Peppers career here in Carolina at a bargain compared to what the Bears paid, then we moved on and now we have a guy who can produce at the same level, on a much more consistent basis, for a fraction of the cost… but hurray for you! you broke the bank for a guy that *almost* helped you win something… first runner up to the NFC championship, CONGRATULATIONS!

It’s gonna suck when they have to start dismantling that team to get back under the cap, now that they sold-out to get aging expensive players who still couldn’t get them over the hump by beating the youngest team in the league with one of the lowest salary cap numbers, that must really sting, I guess you can’t buy a championship after all, huh?

At right about same time the Bears are rebuilding, the Panthers will be contending for the NFC championship with a group of young, talented players who they can keep under contract for many years because we don’t give monster contracts to 30 year old DE’s in a failed effort to buy ourselves a championship.

I guess you didn’t happen to notice that two of the 3 teams in the NFL with the highest # of their own drafted players on the roster played in the superbowl this year… I’ll let you guess who the third team is. It’s called building through the draft so you can sustain success for a long period of time, you might want to look into it and stop following the Daniel Snyder plan for buying a Lombardi trophy in 3 easy steps.
