Cam Newton breakdown

Thanks, you are probably right.

That means that over 80% of his deep pass attempts were thrown catchable. I don’t care what kind of mechanics you are working with, that is impressive accuracy on the deep ball.

If I understand the Coryell offense that the coaching staff seems to be preparing for, would the above be a really good thing for a quarterback in that system to have?

I'am starting to think Cam will be our #1 pick, unless smitty want's a trade, maybe we draft Green, but i doubt that will happen. There are too many DT's in the later round's of the draft or FA. I know Peterson is ranked very high, lot's of CB's out there too. I just can't see passing on Cam. I've seen him play, if he's a fluke, he's the best fluke I've ever seen.

Anybody else notice that sometimes when he drops back, he almost looks like he's faking taking a knee? What is that? Kind of like a running pump fake?
to me it looked like he was getting ready to take off so it could be an atempt to misdirect. it could also be that he's trying to get the defense to wonder where he is.

don't know for sure.

read this re: coryell offense from wiki and tell me what you think...

Overall the goal of the Coryell offense is to have at least two downfield, fast wide receivers who adjust to the deep pass very well, combined with a sturdy pocket quarterback with a strong arm. The Coryell offense uses three key weapons. The first is a strong inside running game, the second is its ability to strike deep with two or more receivers on any play, and the third is to not only use those two attack in cooperation with each other, but to include a great deal of mid-range passing to a TE, WR, or back.

The Coryell offense has the ability to both "eat the clock" with the ground game but also to strike deep and fast without warning. Critics argue that the Coryell offense is ill-suited for coming from behind, as the deep pass attack will be predictable and therefore easy to stop. However, the fact that the offense is structured around a power running game and tall WRs who can win jump balls and have some breakaway speed make this contention hard to support. This offense is built not only for deep passing but also to defeat short yardage and red zone situations. When evenly matched, the Coryell offense can produce big drives and big scoring efficiently. If teams sit back to cover the deep field, offenses should be able to run the ball on them. If the defense tightens down to stop the run, the offense can go deep. If a defense hedges its bets by using three-deep setups with an eight-man defense up front, the QB can pick apart the defense with 10-20 yard passes.

and to any of those who might bring up his lack of reads after the snap...(from the article)

One area of Newton’s game we find to be underrated is his ability to break off his Plan A and Plan B in order to hit his Plan C quickly before the defense could possibly guess at his intentions. This makes him very hard to defend. He knows where everyone on the field is supposed to be at all times according to the play design, and is able to process information and pull the trigger quickly on a forgotten check down option.

This was a quality that Phil Rivers regularly put on display at North Carolina State. His confidence in his timing and mental picture of field and its players is what allows him to use his eyes effectively to deceive defenses. He has talked about in interviews before how he understands that due to pre-snap reads he might have a clear idea of where he will end up going with the ball on some plays, but he has the confidence to be patient and use his eyes before he gets there.

Contrary to popular belief, film study, knowledge of defenses, knowledge of your play designs, and pre-snap reads can give you a pretty clear pre-snap picture of where you ultimately want to end up with the ball at the NFL level on a large percentage of plays. There are those writing for and following the New England Patriots that believe that the majority of Tom Brady’s pass targets are known to him before the snap.

I think drafting Cam will go a long way toward keeping Smitty being that he found Jimmy Clausen to be unimpressive and lacking in leadership and poise.

I'd say your right rippadonn, If Smitty see's the FO doing everything they can to right the ship, you would like to think that would make some difference. But last year was a mix of Fox's hard head and Jerry's goal's, I'am glad Jerry let Fox go. Even if it was a year later than he should've.

I cant blame Smith. Everytime I saw Jimmy on and off the field he seemed not to care too much. He would be with other players but always on his phone or sitting by himself on the bench.

If Cam is drafted he will be the new Jake. A guy that wants nothing more then to win.

I agree on thinking Cam could very well be our pick. I think it will come down to the CBA getting done soon, especially with the 7 day straight thing, so we can pick up solid DT(s). Next couple weeks will be big with CBA & combine.

Best article I believe I have read in awhile, I read the whole thing. Been saying a lot of these things about Cam for months.

The best part of the article was the Work Ethic part. I firmly believe that when it comes to the QB postion (especially in the top of the 1st) work ethic is the most important part of his game. A player can overcome a lot of short comings (especially if there not phyiscal) if he is willing to work his tail off to improve them.

Man I hope we get Newton at #1. If not we better have traded back and picked up some extra picks because this guy is on fire right now.

Ok guys, let me chime in here. CK is very well known by me, I post with him over at thephins messageboard, and himself, simon and richard all from universaldraft.com do a hell of a job with all of this stuff. I dunno if Chris wanted to link the universaldraft website due to potentially being called spam or whatever, but ill do it, i have posted here long enough, met most of you at some of the tailgates (zod, boinmonroe etc) so i dont care if i catch heat and you know iam not just spamming.

This article is fantastic, and the work they do goes sometimes unnoticed on their website. They deserve better. Richard is on that site as well, he was just on my radio show tonight, and like always brought great information. So please give a thanks on the sun sentinel blog, and check out their site.....its fantastic stuff.

And ftr CK, this is "SICK" over at thephins. Cool to see your stuff making it over to other teams sites! You guys killed this break down!
