So you should never draft someone that scouts and analysts rave about?

You should never base draft stock on workouts, at any position.

Grades should be based on what they did under actual game conditions. You can use workouts to differentiate between guys you have similar grades on, but if you move a guy up or down your draft board based on how they look in a controlled situation with no opposition, you're asking for the next Mike Mamula.

as fans we shouldn't go crazy over guys just because they had a great workout or something and analysts are hyping 'em up. workouts only mean so much... using them as a part of why you like a guy is fine but hopefully it's not "because he looked SUPER AMAZING in his workout!" but because he worked on something he needed to and you think that shows improvement or whatever.

obviously though, there's a certain value to listening to and reading what scouts and other professionals say about a guy. but you have to use that as just part of how you're looking at a prospect. I don't even think what analysts say about guys matters to the NFL teams, they have their own scouts for a reason.

yes, there is risk with every pick, but not all picks have equal risk, nor equal value in the end of they prove to be great players.

This is good news for Cam Newton either way. The more guys have watched of Cam Newton on film the more his stock has risen. So much so that even Todd McShay has finally come around and said he is a top ten pick possibly top 5. Kiper now says that by the time it is all said and done he will likely become a top three pick. Bucky Brooks thinks it is a real possibility he goes number 1 overall.

The more these guys are studying him the higher their opinion of him becomes. To summarize, he looks awesome on tape and he looks awesome during the workouts.

If at the combine he interviews well and does well with the "chalk talk" his stock will continue to skyrocket.

All the arguments against this guy are slowly starting to fade away and when it is all said and done it is going to come down to what teams feel about his character off the field. If he can overcome that he will be the first pick in the draft IMO.

Personally I think those talking him up are guilty of buying into hype over 'watching the game tape'. He has the same questions he did at the beginning of this process and nothing has changed since then. His stock is elevated due to lack of a genuine #1 QB or even 1st overall pick.

People suddenly pushing him up the board says that they are going off the things he has done recently, which is the media workout. That's pretty stupid.

If the Panthers draft him because of the media workouts its stupid,

if someone trades us their 1st, 2nd, & their 1st next year its awesome,

if someone trades us their 1st, 2nd, & 3rd for '11, '12 & their 2nd &3rd for '13 its the greatest draft ever...

anything better than that & I'll need a keyboard condom.

This is not correct. At least in regards to Kiper and McShay, they have both said his stock has risen since the have begun watching tape on him. Has little to do with is workout.

At least somebody gets it.

Workouts don't mean jack, regardless of what quarterback you're talking about.

I disagree. Workouts are certainly not the end all be all, but they are a pretty big part of the process. Otherwise, why even bother with the combine or pro days? I you can't throw, you can't play QB, so every scout out there wants to see a QB throw in person before they recommend drafting him. In fact, the guys at the NFL Network recently said that Joe Flacco definitely helped himself during his passing drills at the combine.

The idiocy of these comments astound me. If workouts don't mean jack and tape is all that matters, why does every scout and GM go to the combine, Senior Bowl, Pro Days, and then bring in guys for private workouts???? Would they really waste that much time on guys if the workouts "meant jack"??? I mean I realize that most people are always looking for ways to do more work especially if they feel it means jack .

You guys need to contact the NFL and let them know because they are getting ready to wast a lot of time and money on that combine!!!

I think the point is that workouts are meant to showcase, in a heavily controlled environment. Newton didn't have anyone in his face, didn't have to check down due to coverages, didn't have a rush to contend with, etc. All he had to do is what his handler's had scripted him to do. And by all reports he did great.

So compared to gametape - where the bullets are flying - workouts really don't mean jack.
