I know he was in trouble... but was it really that bad?

Alrighty.

1. Is it all that hard to get a permit for your handgun? In NYC it sure is, pretty much illegal. Maybe he shouldn't get one then?

He could lose an extremely lucrative career and/or go to prison for a very long time.

That is a stupid decision that just about every adult I know wouldn't make.

2. Let's assume it is entirely legal to carry a concealed weapon. Is it hard to get a holster for your handgun? Nope.

He could lose the gun, drop the gun, or give somebody easy access to the gun.

Instead I guess some sweatpants(most likely baggy) will serve as a proper substitute.

EVERYTHING could be in his favor and he's still colossally stupid. Really Mr. Burress? Sweatpants?

Holy poo this guy is a fuging dumbass. Wow.

3. Is it hard to keep the safety on? No. Pretty self explanatory there.

4. Let's assume he has very legitimate threats in locations that he needs to defend himself from.

Isn't it just easier to avoid those locations all together?

Are the drinks, music, and women at that club so amazing that he needs to risk his life to go there? It's extremely unlikely that this club was dangerous if at all.

Does he have to go down back alleys entering/exiting the club? Doubt it.

Is the security at these clubs so incompetent that he needs to carry a gun with him?

Why doesn't he just hire a body guard? Is it such a costly investment that it's cheaper to risk your entire career over it? Armored Car? No more than a Ferrari.

This wasn't a gun found at his house or car. Maybe he could garner some sympathy then. But not tucked in his pants.

Extremely poor judgement. He had to expend great amounts of energy to be stupid. It wasn't an accident.

This, This, This.

Especially since I've witnessed first-hand of the absolute severity of Gun carrying laws in the state of NY. (Especially NYC of all places)

He probably wouldn't have faced jail-time in Texas or some poo, but not in NY.

A very stupid move by the guy. The punishment was borderlie extreme, but justifiable.

I don't want him cause he is really old. I'm just looking into the perspective about the crime vs. how "troubling" he is. I hear everything that your saying Sorth and I agree with the fact he put others in danger because it was in his pants, not on an ankle holster or such, but considering if he played for Carolina at the time and the exact thing would have happened he would have got off with AT MOST probation, a fine, and a misdemeanor. And I feel the Panthers would consider him under athletic probation with any other problems warranting a dismissal from the team.

Nobody ever seems to remember that Burress has two domestic violence incidents on his record too.

He's got poor character, he's up in years, he's not very bright (that's an understatement, really), he was a problem child before and he's been away from football for the past few years.

Bottom Line: He's not coming here, ever. He's not even worth looking at.

Wish we could still give pie.

The guy was a great WR for a couple years before he got in trouble, but his stupidity is just off the charts. I don't think anyone really has a moral problem with what he did, especially people from the South, but someone with that bad of a head on their shoulders isn't worth it. Especially at 34. Maybe at 26...maybe...nevermind, I just thought of Vince Young. Stupid people do stupid things, he should be greeting people at Wal-Mart, not representing our team.

He was charged with reckless endangerment because having on your person so loosely secured means he could have shot somebody else. It's not like he had this gun at his home or in his trunk. He was risking the lives of every single person he was close to.

Assuming everything else in his favor this is still sooooooo stupid. Just no.

This pretty much sums it up.

The guy is careless and stupid. If it weren't for the superbowl his career would have been defined by his mistakes and missed opportunities.

Not worth even bringing in for camp.

On a personal mortality level, I find nothing wrong with what Burress did apart from breaking gun laws.

And to that point, I do not think he deserved prison time for what happened. He hurt no one but himself. I honestly can't believe he couldn't hire an attorney that could have gotten him a probationary sentence, unless he had a record of prior problems I don't know about.

From what I can tell, the system made an example out of him, and I believe treated him unfairly.

That being said...

I do not want that dumbass catching balls in a Panthers uniform.

Thanks!

I honestly don't know that any attorney could have stood up to the Bloomburg tyranny that is reigning in NY right now. I absolutely agree that the punishment did not fit the crime (which I don't think it should be a crime anyway).

Stupid? Absolutely. Illegal? Apparently so. Immoral? Not if you ask our founding fathers. I wish that people would pull the curtain away from government prosecuting possible violations of civil liberties rather than actual crimes.

It may have started as a subtle nuance, but it has steamrolled into the leviathan we see today.

In one of his letters to John Adams, Thomas Jefferson said that any man who puts a loaded weapon that close to his penis deserves to go to prison.

Adams and Jefferson said a lot of unbecoming things to each other in public much less private letters to each other
