And these gimick QB's you like don't win superbowls till theylearn to stay in the pocket and throw. how many superbowls for Randall cunningham, Mike Vick etal?

You still win this game and always will by reading a defense and THROWING the ball, not running around.

What about Big Ben? He seemed to win a few SB. So did Steve Young before him and they both came from "Gimick" offenses. Also like it or not Mike Vick even when he was running for the biggest douche award was causing us major problems in our DIV.

If I'm going to take a questionable spread option quarterback, I'm taken Cam Newton. He's an athletic freak and is a winner.

That is, IF I take a spread option QB. I'd love for us to take Patrick Peterson.

wat.

Gabbert did not play in a spread option offense. They probably had like 3 option plays... all year.

can't really compare the offense Big Ben ran to Cam Newton's (or The Golden Calf of Bristol's), but they aren't really gimmick offenses either imo.

now, whether or not their success will transition, I don't know.

I do know that Gabbert is better than his Illinois highlight. His deep ball accuracy increased greatly over the season. His decision making is VERY good (check out his interceptions-per-attempt ratio, its pretty good). He's a leader on and off the field and a damn smart kid. It's known around here I like the guy, but I've actually seen games of him, more than most posters here since I've got some family connection to Mizzou and follow the program. AND, before you guys jump all over me, despite the fact i like him a lot, I have serious doubts about us taking a QB, ANY QB, #1. Just saying there is a reason he's "hyped"... he's a great prospect.

One of the reasons he's rated higher than Cam Newton right now is because he was actually a pocket passer in college. Both will have a transition; some think Gabbert's will be easier. I guess we'll all see.

The QB's in the draft are all projects in one part of their game or another. While I agree Newton has the most potential of any of them in the draft. Potential has gotten alot of coaches fired and you would think with a new coach that they would go with the safest pick. Which would mean no QB with the 1st pick.

I don't know that they will go safe just because they have a new coach.

Taking a QB would certainly make a splash and indicate a stark change from the previous regime.

I do think that Cam Newton is more likely as the #1 pick than Gabbert, though I don't know that he is the better quarterback or the better QB prospect, but Newton has a lot of hype factors going for him and while I know the Panthers won't draft on hype, they might draft on raw potential... and while Gabbert has some, Newton's seems sky high.

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
