The Blane Gabbert hype machine!

It would be nice to have a decent vet QB who could play well a couple of season's to help Jimmy, Cam, who ever end's up on the roster. Rookie QB's need some time to adjust to the speed and complexity of NFL defense's. It did'nt do Jimmy any good to be starting as a rookie, with 2 rookie WR's. Colt McCoy did'nt set the world on fire, and most of the time he looked like, well...like a rookie.

People dont want to admit it but if we are crazy enough to give up a 2nd for Edwards, and a first for Brown, then we are crazy enough to take Cam with our first pick. Gabbert will more then likely go to the bills who will take just about anyone right now.

i actually think the bills and the bengals are both too smart to draft gabbert early and neither of them are really desperate enough for a QB. bengals can get another year off palmer who will probably be happier with the OC change and the bills can work with fitz for a couple more years.

the cards...it wouldn't surprise me to see them reach for gabbert. they are probably more desperate for a QB than we are.

a few things regarding Gabbert:

the video posted was from the illioinois game, a game which they one, and the first game of the season. I haven't been able to find game tape yet, but all the scouts were talking about how well gabbert did as the year went on, meaning he progressed and played better.

in his game against oklahoma, who was ranked #1 at the time, Gabbert went 30/42, 308 yards, 1TD with no Picks.

against #24 Kansas state, he went 17/25 for 208 with 2TDs and a pick

The kid has produced in big games, including the bowl game he threw the boneheaded pick at the end of the game. had he not done that, Missouri wins and he's probably game MVP. Kid passed for over 400 yards in that game.

Kid can play, he's just really raw right now, like any QB coming out of college.

all i see from that (and everything else i have seen and read about him) points to him being nothing more than an average at best QB. there is nothing even potentially elite about him.

he had a few games that someone could call respectable, but you put him up against newton or luck and the dude pales in comparison.

gabbert isn't even good in the spread and still people have him hyped.

he shows how desperate people are for a traditional QB in this draft.

And these gimick QB's you like don't win superbowls till theylearn to stay in the pocket and throw. how many superbowls for Randall cunningham, Mike Vick etal?

You still win this game and always will by reading a defense and THROWING the ball, not running around.

If I'm going to take a questionable spread option quarterback, I'm taken Cam Newton. He's an athletic freak and is a winner.

That is, IF I take a spread option QB. I'd love for us to take Patrick Peterson.

Winner? he had one season at a D1 school, ran from another before booted. Again someone show me how many of these athletic freaks win superbowls

There isn't any... not because there aren't any that have not won a superbowl, there just isn't anyone comparable to the athletic freak Cam Newton is.

This is a ridiculous argument, because there have only been a small handful of running QB's in the history of the NFL, but there have been hundreds of pocket passers.

FTR though, Steve Young, Aaron Rodgers, and Big Ben all run quite a bit and they all have rings, and Steve McNair just missed winning one by 1 single yard. Meanwhile, Dan Marino, who is one of the best pocket passers of all time, never won a Super Bowl.

A small handful good enough to have any success at all. Plenty have been drafted.

Name them then, because I sure as heck don't remember seeing a long line of elite black athletes being drafted to play QB over the years. Most of them were forced to either change positions or go to Canada to play QB.

you win the game by dominating and controlling the opposing defense. you control what they do and force them to react to what you're doing. you do it by keeping plays alive and making things happen, either by waiting for someone to open up or moving the ball forward yourself.

the designation "gimmick" QB is even worse than "running" QB. i hate categorizations because it makes false assumptions about players and forces people to put players in a box so they don't have to think anymore or thnk critically about individual players. it's lazy.

a good coach can figure out a way for someone to utilize their ability to be a double threat QB just like they can using any strength of any player. they can scheme so that a QB who runs and throws effectively can use both to dominate the other side. a smart QB who can do both well often uses it. you'll see it with luck and you'll see it with newton. you saw it with steve young, fran tarkenton, randall cunningham, and you're seeing it with aaron rodgers and to an extent, big ben.

oh...and about them not winning a superbowl...since when do QBs win superbowls all by themselves? was marino not a good QB because he didn't win the big one? how about jim kelly or boomer esiason or warren moon or dan fouts or fran tarkenton? would manning or drew brees have been considered as great QBs if they not won one? if mcnabb doesn't ever win one, does that mean he was a bad QB?

might as well say andy reid, schotty, or dan reeves weren't good coaches because they didn't win a ring.

    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
    • We're in a great position to see just how big of a misstep it would be, having made so many ourselves
