Just because a player doesn't have a stellar career in college, doesn't mean he wont be good in the NFL. (i.e. Tom Brady, Kurt Warner, Josh Freeman, etc).

I think we all need to take a deep breath, wait until the Combine, and see what happens.

If Gabbert* destroys it, then yes, I say we take him. Or, hype him up as much as possible, and get some other team to trade up and get him.

ok, before Luck decided not to enter the Draft people were saying he was the only QB worth taking in the top ten of the Draft, Luck then leaves and now we're asking ourselves if these guys that we would have never considered before are worth it? Don't pick a Qb for the sake of picking a QB that's retarded, give Clausen another season and see if he works out or not, and if we still suck next year we have Luck, so by going that route we can't lose.

If we pick a maybe and end up paying him $70 mil and he turns into a JaMarcus Russel we're screwed for maybe the next 5 seasons after that.

Drafting in the top 10 is one of those things that your better off going with the Safer pick instead of swinging for the fences and hoping they work out.

There is no guarantee that we will get the opportunity to pick Luck next year or any of the other guys supposedly better than Newton or Gabbert. We will be bringing in competition for Clausen that has already been stated by Rivera. With that goes the distinct possibility that either Clausen or the vet yet to be named will help us win some more games perhaps 5 or 6. That will almost guarantee that we won't get a Qb that we want next year either. And if Clausen doesn't work out we are just a year further down the road and no better off than we are now. If there is a rookie cap we will be spending closer to 20 million not 70 million. As for safer, there are guys who could produce sooner than a QB but you don't have the impact player you would get either.

Agree, although I don't think it necessarily means getting Luck. Just a better shot at a franchise QB.

There will be a move at QB for the Panthers this offseason. Whether that means drafting one with our top pick, or taking one in FA, or both.. we will find out later.

Defense showed enough potential last season to get better for next year, and offensive is our true need based on performance last year.

Rivera did talk highly of the wide receivers that we had, and with Edwards having more time to practice we will hopefully be that much better (of course, if smitty stays, i can see if Smith left then Aj Green would be a solid choice).

Anyway, the #1 pick needs to be a quarterback, and Cam Newton should be the pick. I would actually like to see Clausen turn into the best QB ever, like a better Drew Brees. But in the event of Clausen's second chance failing, it would be nice to have an athlete who can make something happen in Newton.

I really like the DT and DE that are the only other real options, but we can suffer on without them since our offense played so horribly. Plus I am tired of our identity of good defense and a running game. This league, and for that matter the future league, will always be a passing league.

Time to get with the times (But keep DWill on the roster no matter what the cost).

This is something I wish more people understood.

Yes, we have a need at quarterback. And yes, there are quarterbacks available in the draft. Those two factors do not automatically mean that uising the top pick on a quarterback is the best way to go. There are other options.

And again, we really picked a lousy year to need a quarterback :(

I think we picked a lousey year to pick anything other than a cb or wr.I have more concerns regarding Fairley than I do Newton.From what I read his work ethic is a question as is his demeanor.Bowerers is having surgery and is a one year wonder as well.The problem is teams just do not spend that type of rookie money on a wr or CB.When was the last year a cb was the first pick of the draft?Who knows it may be the safest decision.

Gabbert recently spent several days in the Valley working out at the Athletes Performance center in preparation for next week's NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

"I like Gabbert a lot," Mayock said. "He can make every throw, he's a big kid and he's more athletic than people think.

"I've probably seen at least seven of his games and purely on tape, he reminds me of the guys who have done well in the last couple years. He reminds me of (the Rams' Sam) Bradford. He reminds me of (the Falcons') Matt Ryan.

"If you look at the last three years, NFL teams have done a really good job with their first-round quarterbacks. There's been like six hits in a row with no busts, which probably means we're due for a couple of busts."

Where did you see that? Pretty much every scouting report I've seen on Cam Newton, says that his throwing motion is just fine, but he needs to work on footwork, which he is already doing. This is not The Golden Calf of Bristol, where they have to change the way he's been throwing a football all of his life.

My position is unchanged. I don't believe there are any sure fire franchise QBs in the draft. We've already got two "project" QBs and don't need another.

Thank you. Nice to see someone else gets it. I will go so far as to say Andrew Luck was mostly Hype/ Media machine. I didn't see the arm nor the quick decision making many hyped up. Now will he be a franchise QB? Um...after sitting a couple years like Rogers did.

Back to your original point, its spot on. I don't see one true 'franchise' QB in this draft. All these dogs have fleas and some more fleas than dog if you get my meaning. ALL are projects and ALL will sit for 2-3 years minimum.

I know fans want a new starter and YES we need one. The only way to have one on the field for 2011 is call up Denver for Orton, Philly for Kolb or Washington for McNabb. We have a 3rd that is essentially a 2nd, or a 4th that is essentially a 3rd...make the offer and see what happens.
