Yasinskas suggests Gabbert at #1

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

the dude has no poise under pressure, has horrible footwork, only throws to one side of the field. in his last season at mizzou looked like clausen did as a rookie (running scared). we seriously want that?

where the hell does this "he only throws to one side of the field" come from?? he certainly threw all over the field and particularly liked to attack the middle of the field and highlights of him show him going all over. Are you referring to the fact that his offense was designed to read one side of the field at a time?

anyway, his pocket presence is not much worse from what other very high rated QBs have had, but he has the intangibles to take it the extra mile. Coaching can really help there... it's not all instinctual. Same with footwork. He can work on it, and he's already preparing for the draft and the combine, he's just not holding media days about it.

As to if he's a bigger project than Newton or not, honestly Newton has far more ground to cover but does have a potentially higher ceiling... but I do think Gabbert can have a place in this league as an elite quarterback. I am less certain of Cam Newton, but admittedly I have seen far more of Gabbert than Newton.

I don't see us taking either of them anyway.

As a note, I am a bit of a Mizzou homer. I do not think Clausen is without hope, but I certainly DO make fun of him... When people say things like "I've heard he's just like Clausen, we don't need him!!!" I assume they don't think very highly of Clausen.

I like the fact that you are calling him yo gabba, but i disagree with you. If you think Gabs needs 3-4 years behind an established vet QB, then cam needs just as much time, if not more. Yo gabba Gabbert's best thing going for him is his football IQ and his ability to be easily coached. kid is apparently a sponge, and watches film regularly. off the charts intangibles, and plays QB more like a QB than newton (if you know what i mean, he is a true passer)

I am not sure about Cam's intangibles, but he seems like he picks things up quickly, his teammates love him, he keeps everyone around him loose and he seems to love playing the game.

both kids, in my opinion, need at least 1 year on the bench to learn the intricacies of the game. it all depends on who you would rather take on a personal level between those two. both have a lot of upside, newton with his athletic prowess and gabbert with his intelligence, but neither are ready to start from day 1. If you draft either, you are drafting for the future, not the immediate future.

you have no way of knowing that his football IQ is any higher than newton and the same goes with newton's coachability. newton is very coachable according to everyone that has worked with him. newton has a ton more raw ability than yo gabba and has loads more upside. newton also has something that gabba lacks...an ability to handle pressure.

you want love? look at the way newton's teammates respond to him in games. look at the way he interacts with the fans and gets them hyped up.

any assertion that gabba has anything at all over newton is absurd.

you haven't been paying attention, then. you watch his games and you will see that he avoids the right side of the field. many people have noticed it. when he doesn't ahve any options on the side he is comfortable throwing to and/or is feeling pressure, he loses it. take your homer goggles off and you'll see.

also, there is no way that gabbert has greater intangibles than newton. he is at best an average QB and that is all he will ever be.

sure all these QBs are projects but rarely are they ever not and in this draft every one of them looks like that so raw talent holds more weight, which is why Gabbert and Newton are on top, and guys like Mallett are projected higher than the 3rd round

put me in Hurney's seat and i would seriously consider and study Gabbert and Newton,

and consider them within the pool that also includes Dareus, Fairley, and Green.

one other wildcard is Jake Locker if he falls to 65 and we go elsewhere with the first pick. He just seems like the kind of player Hurney would fall for in his attitude, intangibles, and he might take the least amount of development to start, but I'm not really impressed with him to think he is any better a prospect than Clausen was.

I don't know what you've been watching but he does not ignore one side over the other. He will target both sides, and the idea that he avoids the right side when he's under pressure is ridiculous since he actually bails to his right side often enough that I don't know how you feel that way. I do watch his games, and I have for the last two years. I have not noticed him avoiding an entire side of the field when under pressure at all.

As to his intangibles, he has no character concerns, is extremely coachable, spends a great deal of time in the gym, is a leader of his team on and off the field, takes his education seriously enough that he is actually doing well academically (all big 12 academic team last year, not sure this), and he's tough. Now, I'm not going to say his are "better" than Newton because I don't know either of them personally. I will say that there are ZERO concerns about Gabbert's character, and even if you believe that Newton will easily overcome his in interviews, you can't possibly say he doesn't have any.

i can argue you have no idea that newton's ISN'T higher than Gabbert's. truthfully you are looking at the situation extremely biased. I have decided to shed my anti-Cam shades and look at things from a more neutral perspective, that's why i'm even considering newton as a first overall pick.

truth is, Cam is not an established PASSER yet. he is an established winner, and leader, but like you said, he is incredibly raw when it comes to his passing abilities. to think that he could come in as a rookie and beast mode all over everyone's face as a passer would be just as ignorant in thinking Gabbert could do it too.

Both have tremendous upside, but Newton is the bigger risk due to the off the field issues and lack of experience. this is not to say that gabbert doesn't come with any faults either, Gabbert is a risk too, but mostly because he came from a spread and doesn't know how to make reads just yet. Gabbert does have something that Cam doesn't, and that is a spotless record. like it or not, whether you believe the laptop stuff or the pay to play stuff, it's in newton's past and you can't ignore it.

both have the potential to be coached up something fierce, and your complete disregard for the blaine train is negligent.

I agree with pretty much everything you said but I'd like to say again that we aren't assembling a church choir. Gabbert hasn't faced the scrutiny or the media attention Newton has. Who knows what you could find out about Gabbert with a little digging, "Find me the man and I'll find you the crime" as someone so famously said.

i totally agree, I'm just saying that newton has more blemishes on his record than gabbert seems to, and like it or not, that will come into play when deciding on the QB taken.
