Yasinskas suggests Gabbert at #1

I think both Gabbert and Newton are a significant upgrade over Clausen in terms of potential. Sure both could fail but if they don't we have our quarterback for the next decade. For me that is worth a first round pick. Everyone talks about setting ourselve back 5 years if we don't find a can't miss guy but honestly that isn't true for us.

When Davis was number 1 and didn't see the field for almost two years, were we set back for years? When Williams didn't play much at all his rookie year and has only played 16 games in the past 2 years, have we been set back for years??

One draft pick doesn't make or break you. Sure you want to hit a home run and have a guy contribute from day 1 but our history has actually been that our first rounders don't come in and play day 1. Sometimes they don't contribute until year 2. Otah, Stewart, and Beason have come in and contributed where as other guys like Brown (gave up a first rounder for him), Thomas and Williams didn't contribute much and we weren't that hurt by it.

Nothing ventured nothing gained.

if you firmly believe it, and it doesn't matter to you if others believe it then i have to wonder why you feel the need to say it every time someone brings up any quarterback from the draft.

Because it's a message board and we're discussing topics :sosp:

If they're going to reach I'd rather them reach for Cam Newton.

I'd rather they not reach at all.

NFL Live just did a "Strengths & Weaknesses" from the Top 4 Rookie QB's from last year.

They had Clausen's greatest strength in his decision making, and his greatest weakness was his "frail body" (same weakness they gave to McCoy)

Haha, frail body... I wonder what they really meant for that. I do think his measurables are one of his greatest weaknesses but they are something he can overcome.

Gabbert and Clausen are nothing alike.

They may both be good, or they may both suck, but either way, they're very different QBs the way I see it.

they screwed it up, they put clausen's picture up when they were talking about mccoy, then didn't show a headline at the bottom of the screen when mentioning clausen's positives, because, you know, there were none, and then when they talked about his weaknesses they showed what they had for mccoy

also, I would be perfectly fine if hurney and Co. decide to draft a QB with the first pick. I will not complain one bit, in fact, I'd be excited.

I would be too, but I don't know that it is the best move for the organization, long term, and nor am I sold it is something they will do.

They will consider it, though. That much I think is clear.

I can't imagine us going #1... Gabbert or Newton or anyone else.

6'5, 240 lbs and athletic enough to shake off hits, keep plays alive down field, and run for first downs when necessary isn't exactly poor shape physically... but you're right, he's not a freak like Newton. Nobody is. But I don't know that "physical freak" is a requirement for franchise QB.

lol, wow, talk about ridiculous comparisons run amok.

I said potential darsh, and Clausen was rated very highly coming out of college too. I see little difference. So so arm strength, not a proven winner, nothing jumps out about his work ethic .... yea

Gabbert doesn't have "so so" arm strength, his coaches love him, he's smart, he has absolutely NO "character concerns" at all like Clausen supposedly did coming out, he doesn't have the same mechanics problems, and winning much in college is really overrated, though Missouri has won a decent number of games with Gabbert.

Yes, a lot of scouts loved Clausen coming out, but that doesn't mean that all scouts are wrong and anyone they like automatically has to suck.

I never said he was going to suck (so by you saying this you are claiming that Clausen sucks and are judging a player from a horrid offense from a horrid season after their rookie year----I call bandwagon already, but that's a different argument for a different day)

I just don't think he is even the best option at qb, much less the BPA. I could be completely wrong, and he could be awesome.

My original point was I think Newton's ceiling is higher, therefore if we were going to take a gamble with another rookie qb (which I'm 99 percent sure we won't) I'd rather take a gamble with someone with a ridiculously high ceiling.

Yes I compared him to Michael Vick, so have a lot of other people

yo gabba gabert is horrible! i still for the life of me can't see how this clown can be rated above newton...or really any in this draft.

the dude has no poise under pressure, has horrible footwork, only throws to one side of the field. in his last season at mizzou looked like clausen did as a rookie (running scared). we seriously want that?

only QB in this draft worth taking at all is newton.

oh...and  at any one who thinks that newton is more of a project than yo gabba. the guy needs 3-4 years sitting behind an established vet on a team whose oline gives the QB all day to throw and whose receivers only play on the right side of the field.

I like the fact that you are calling him yo gabba, but i disagree with you. If you think Gabs needs 3-4 years behind an established vet QB, then cam needs just as much time, if not more. Yo gabba Gabbert's best thing going for him is his football IQ and his ability to be easily coached. kid is apparently a sponge, and watches film regularly. off the charts intangibles, and plays QB more like a QB than newton (if you know what i mean, he is a true passer)

I am not sure about Cam's intangibles, but he seems like he picks things up quickly, his teammates love him, he keeps everyone around him loose and he seems to love playing the game.

both kids, in my opinion, need at least 1 year on the bench to learn the intricacies of the game. it all depends on who you would rather take on a personal level between those two. both have a lot of upside, newton with his athletic prowess and gabbert with his intelligence, but neither are ready to start from day 1. If you draft either, you are drafting for the future, not the immediate future.
