Question about the possiblity of a lockout

I'm aware of the possibility of a lockout, but haven't really read into it too much.

My question is, I'm not really clear on what happens after the CBA runs out on March 3rd. Do the NFL and NFLPA continue talks after the 3rd to get a deal done in hopes of playing the 2011-12 season? Or do they have to wait until the next calender year to get a new deal done and play the 2012-13 season?

I'm not sure of the answer to your question, but it would be kind of stupid if they are somehow magically bound to wait until 2012-13 after a certain date.

They'll continue to work on it, there's no "drop dead" date. Even if games are lost they continue, hypothetically.

They don't even have to lock the players out after the March 3 deadline. They can call an impasse, force the offer that was on the table at the time of impasse on the players, and operate under the impasse. Which would mean the players would be the ones that would either just eat it or go on strike.

I know my link is to PFT, but it makes a lot of sense for the owners to make the players responsible for no football and avoid the PR hit from it.
