Mayock says Fairley is not top DT talent in the draft class...

yes I agree. Funny people here talk about Fairley being the BPA in the draft when he's not even the best at his position.

For every 1 you can get that says Fairley is not best DT, you can find one that says he is. Using one person's opinion as gospel is kind of silly don't you think? Let the combine, interviews and etc take place.

If the JJ defense calls for a gap-shooting, 3-technique DT, then he is the best. 24 tackles for loss, 60 tackles, and 11.5 sacks in the SEC? Pretty good, IMO.

However, I say the "Steve Smith wants a trade" dialogue could lead us to take Green, arguably the best player in the draft.

He's hit and miss on his picks but I think he is right on this one.

So is Hurney. He called his bad picks "The nature of the draft." But when you trade away first rounders for undersized DEs, when you trade second rounders to draft small school QBs to convert to other positions, you create bad nature.

This is one of those really tricky things.

Fairley is the flashier, showier of the two, and he has more hype because he was in the National Championship game. Dareus could easily be the more consistent, safer choice of the two, but potentially not as much of an impact player.

Having to make these kinds of choices really sucks. Take the first guy, and you risk learning that he was all flash and no substance while the other guy proves to be a solid player. Take the second, and you might learn that number one actually was as good as advertised while number two is just average (essentially Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan all over again).

Right now, I'd probably still favor Fairley at #1. If they managed to trade down a few spots though, Dareus could make more sense.

Glad my job doesn't ride on having to make these sorts of decisions.

Best case scenario for me at this point, trade down a handful of spots, get an extra 2nd rounder, take Dareus. That's if you can find a trade partner which is a HUGE if.

If you're stuck at #1 then you go with the best player you can get, no reaching for need. To me the really elite talents are Patrick Peterson and AJ Green.
