The 3 No's to Newton

CarolinaCatBrigade

Recommended Posts

OMG, at 19, he bought a laptop he knew was stolen. OH NOES!

We have had players with DUIs on our team that continued to play and got another DUI. We've had fist fights at practice. We've had guys doping up for games.

Got anything else?

If a person's fate is decided because of something this minor he did when he was in his teens, then we live a sad society.

NFL =/= An amatuer institutionalized sport.

I don't care if he stole the Heisman, and robbed the BCS title. If he comes and plays for us and wins a bunch of games, he gets my OK.

This is true no matter what offense type a player comes from. Jimmy Clausen came from a "pro" offense. Didn't help him much.

This is also true no matter what POSITION you draft someone for.

Either you take a chance or you don't. People who never risk big, never win big.

When Warren Moon and Trent Dilfer are saying he is a gifted passer, I'm going to read something like this and lol.

Well opinions are like .... something else... everyone has one.

Here's a counter opinion:

At 6'6", 250 lb., and capable of running a 40 in 4.5 seconds, and a sharp and strong arm, Newton is an athletic phenom. He is gifted with talent that is RARE. His college accomplishments and stats show that. He's a highlight reel a minute. He is a dedicated worker, and someone people rally around according to his coaches and former teammates.

We had the worst QB play in franchise history. Fixing that is going to take something amazing. Newton looks like he could be that something amazing.

We either take a chance, or we continue to flounder.

You refuse to accept he has any negatives?

1. I'll be honest... I just don't care about the laptop incident. Nor do I care a bit about the pay-for-play stuff. If he did take the money I don't blame him for a second; I'd have taken it too, as would the vast majority of college players. Most probably have taken money, they just haven't been caught.

I don't even view either issue as a "character concern."

2. So he ran a simple scheme? So did Bradford, so did The Golden Calf of Bristol. And also, just because that's the system he did run doesn't mean it's the only system he's capable of running. Just like the Rams did with Bradford, you look at his skillset and ask yourself "can he do it in the NFL?" He's a project that will require some time, yes, but his potential is such that I simply don't believe we can pass on him. Not with our awful QB situation and offense from last year.

3. This is a concern, yes, but no QB prospect outside of the rare Andrew Luck's of the world is perfect. Everyone admits that he's a project and will need heavy coaching to reach his potential. This can be coached out of him - IS being coached out of him as we discuss all this by a hall of fame QB in Warren Moon. He'll be that much farther along in his development come training camp than he was during the season last year as a result.

But lets not forget the grade issues. Everybody seems to be focusing on the laptop and taking money.

I do not see how anybody can ignore the trend and invest heavily into this guy.

Problem for you is solved.

Dumb as hell post. You don't care he is a cheat and a thief? Right there you lost all credibility as a poster. Next you don't care about the system he ran? you think Bradford was in a simple system? You are an idiot. Bradford was known for reading the field better than just about anyone coming out of college in the last 20 years you moron. how many times you worked with the OU staff? How many times have you met Malzahn, been to his clinics? Let me clue you in son, the answer for me is MANY TIMES and I can tell you, you're dumb as hell

1.Loschak (victim) has forgiven and forgotten why cant you. Plus charges were dropped!

2. the pay-to-play stuff first of it hasn't been proven, secondly it should only attest to his skill set and ability. An institute taking that much of a risk, the athlete has to be worth it wouldn't you think?

3. He left the gators because he knew The Golden Calf of Bristol was gonna be starter, he didn't want to settle for 2nd string. What he did was more difficult, Win with two different systems on two different levels, on top of being part of a winning team in Florida. Winning is contagious.

He was probably going to be expelled from Florida. It's at least an issue.

Auburn runs a system that doesn't translate well to the NFL, never has. Spread QBs...this article sums it up nicely

http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/2009/04/spread-quarterbacks-in-nfl.html

But if he can buck the trend and develop quickly into a pocket passer he could be a beast

I don't think that article dismisses spread option QB's. And the offense that it uses as it's example is the same Missori offense Blaine Gabbert ran.

good points.
we need a pro Cam thread...and a con Cam thread...that way I don't need to open either one.
i might do that, though it would be reposting something i've posted before. won't be much different than people rehashing the same old stuff, though.
You refuse to accept he has any negatives?
positives outweigh the negatives, esp. the ones that really don't matter. the character concerns are overrated and are well in the past. dude has grown up and changed. i'm supposing, though, that some of you perfect guys in here have never had mistakes to get over from your youth and are the exact same person you were when you were young. believe it or not, people can grow up. no reason to believe he hasn't...and if you are thinking abou tose allegations of pay to play...it was his dad that was supposedly trying to pull it off and there is no indication that he actually did. this is still america, isn't it? people are innocent until proven guilty, right? wait...no, you're a brit. might not matter to you all that much. i suppose if you are a black kid thats high profile that is popular to hate, you're willing to go ahead and consider the worst possible scenario as fact.
