JR condescending to Peyton Manning during CBA meeting?

Yes it's been discussed, and the idea is silly.

Guys aren't going to turn down free agent contracts saying "Sure, I like the coach and it's good money and all but OMG HE WAS SO MEAN TO PEYTON HOW COULD HE SAY THAT IT HURT HIS FEELINGS I'LL NEVER SPEAK TO HIM AND I HOPE HE DIES"

I'm not just talking about a single insult to Manning. There have been multiple references. It's not just the insults. I know it's easy to be dismissive, but assuming the market is competitive why would you choose:

A) The team with an owner that was repeatedly an a**hole to players

B) The team with an owner that led the effort to intentionally cut your incomes, make you play more games, etc.

C) The team that was the laughing stock of the NFL last year

D) The team with no quarterback

Everyone can talk all they want about the upside of this team, how young they are, and how excited everyone should be about the new coaches, but the idea that players would not want to play here as a result of JR's actions (not just his words) is not silly. Like many people here, I respect your opinion, but on this issue, respectfully disagree.

The Bengals, Raiders, Lions, Bills and others sign free agents every year, and they have a far longer history of failure than the Panthers have had.

Every owner/GM cuts guys on an annual basis that their teammates love to play alongside and really hate to see go. It's part of the business. These are grown men. They know that.

Except for some perennial bottom-dwellers, "worst to first" is a pretty common thing in today's NFL.

Add in that any player who's pansy enough to not want to play here just because someone talked mean to Peyton isn't likely someone I'd want on roster anyway. If he can get his feelings hurt over that, what's he gonna do when he screws up and Rivera lights into him, sit on the bench and cry?

A year from now - outside of the perpetual doom and gloom choir on this board - people probably won't even remember this.

Players do not even make up a majority of the employees of the Panthers. Not sure where your 90% comes from.

Yeah but those other employees aren't involved in these negotiations. I just assumed that everybody would know I wasn't including the janitors or the grounds crew.

When it's all said and done, players care about 3 things ultimately and mostly in this order: getting paid, getting playing time and winning. who they do it for, really doesnt matter

Hey nimrods...

Who would you go with? If the money is equal why would you want to go play for a "perceived" enemy.

We will have to overpay. If you think the Panthers are going to land a Free Agent when we offer equal or less money you are crazy. Richardson didn't screw the fans he screwed himself. Enjoy the $10 beers because that is the only way players like Cofield will come here...over pay his ass.

Panthro, do you really believe that every potential FA is going to automatically say no to the Panthers just because of this? That's just crazy talk. Maybe some players won't want to come here if we keep losing, but that's another matter. If the Panthers start winning, I guarantee you that no FA will say no to them, unless the money is better somewhere else, which has always been the case anyway.

I didn't say that. Reread. Then reread again. Of course, all things being equal I'd say that every potential FA is going to automatically say no to the Panthers....for the next few years

Well it's almost impossible that the Panthers and some other team will make identical offers to the same player, as well as have identical records and run identical schemes, so you're assuming an awful lot.

It all boils down to the fact that you believe this one incident will screw us for the next 4-5 years, and I don't believe that for one second. Hell, half of these players won't even be in the league in 3-4 years anyway.
