JR condescending to Peyton Manning during CBA meeting?

NFL players are the product.

Players sacrfice their body and their shelf life is extemely small compared to other sports or professions. Do you know how many players live a semi-crippled life short time after after they retire?

90% of small businesses that are started by a first time businessperson go bankrupt in the first 2 years. How many NFL teams do that? Zero, because of the monopoly and revenue sharing.

But these employees/products know that coming in ....

They may sacrifice their bodies, but they get paid well for it. It is a choice, though.

thanks for contradicting your own argument dippoo,

who do you think negotiates these TV contracts? I love Julius Peppers as a DE but I have my doubts about him in the FOX boardroom. How about Dan Morgan? You wanna say you think the TV contracts are as big as they are with him negotiating the payouts, time-slots, hybrid scheduling, and region airing? Maybe you think some of the stars like Headcase Terrell Owens or a guy who changed his own last name to an incorrect translation of his jersey number to be in charge of how TV money is distributed and allocated around the league.

Not me pal.

You can negotiate the TV contract all day long, but if you don't put Julius Peppers and Terrell Owens on the screen, then the TV companies will tell you no thanks.

Media has changed over the last 30 years and everyone has benefited. It's why the NFL owners and players can demand the prices they demand

yet another stupid argument...

How many $100 tickets are sold every Sunday because of one menu item in the NFL? PSLs? Sunday Ticket Packages? Now compare those numbers to how many are sold because people want to see their team play or better yet two football teams play, or better still 32 teams play it out for the weekly standings.

hundreds of thousands? please get a petition of ..say ...a hundred that became a fan of a franchise simply because "aw-shucks" media darling went Purple? I'll show you a list of moron fans if you can.

One word will make you look like a bigger fool than you already do.

The Golden Calf of Bristol.

It depends on what you call a slave. They have a contract that they must fullfill or face monetary and legal ramifications. They are indeed a slave to the contract that they signed. If they walk away from the contract, then they may or may not get to participate in the game that they have dedicated their lives too. So, yes, they are voluntary slaves and this is why Richardson is so upset. The slaves want more money and he's upset, so he lashes out at them and treats them like hired hands.

The National Labor Relations Act gave these men the right to fight for wages, benefits and fair labor practices. The owners may not like the fact that they must negotiate with the hired help, but they must. It's the law.

Do you recognize the JJR is representing the owners?

"Voluntary slaves"? Really?

What the fug is a "voluntary" slave any way?

Dumbest fuging arguement that I have EVER seen made here.

Does a player have the right to walk away from an NFL team when he is under contract? NO

Does a player have to return the contract money if he walks? YES

Can a player who walked out of a contract go play for another NFL team? NO

Does a player face legal action if he walks out of a contract? YES

They are a slave to the contract they sign. They do not have the right to walk away. I don't know many companies that have this kind of control over a human. There are non-compete clauses, but those don't prevent you from working in your industry, only taking clients with you.

They negotiate the revenue stream and pay for the Julius Peppers and Tom Brady's to entertain us. You said it.

Agreed. Seems to me the term voluntary slave is an oxymoron. You can't volunteer to be a slave. By the nature of the term slavery is impressing someone into service without their permission and forcing them to work for little or no compensation. Players line up to play in the NFL and can leave at any time. They sign contract voluntarily and know exactly what they are getting into.

You could argue that because their is only one NFL that they either chose to play or they are cut out of the opportunity but when the lowest salry they could make as a fulltime player is hundreds of thousands more than they could likely make doing anything else, it is hard to have a ton of sympathy for them. They deserve to be paid fairly and I think they are. The negotiation here is the owners trying to scale back costs to the 2006 level not cut players out completely. '

The problem as I see it is as much psychological as anything. This is a simplistic example but still apropos. It is like giving your children 15 dollars allowance every week and then cutting them back to 10. It feels like a takeaway no matter how much they are receiving. If they had been offered 5 dollars and then moved to 10 dollars they would still be making the same but in the first case the child feels punished and in the second case rewarded. The problem is that the last CBA gave too much away and it is much harder to take it back without a lot of negative feelings. So this is the result. Players see what they are losing not what they still have which is one of the best jobs in the world.

Players retire every year without facing legal action.

Would you apply that to current players?

Again, you don't know the meaning of the word.

I don't know a players in the league that would walk away from the NFL after only two season and after winning the Superbowl over $250. He wanted a $250 raise and the Colts said no. He walked away. That's not principle. That's stupidity.

I understand that the Football was not a career back in the 60s and it was more for fun. I know that these guys all had other jobs, so I somewhat get that, but give me a break. Don't call it principle. It's the same crap he's pulling right now. I'm not going to pay guys what they are worth, I'm not going to sign comparable talent and I'm going to tank the 2010 season over principle?

I respect Richardson's accomplishments, but that doesn't mean that he is always right. He is dead wrong in his actions over the last few year. You don't sacrifice the PSL owner and the fans hard earned dollars over a CBA contract. You spit in the fans face one too many times and the fans will call for your head.

I feel like this whole thing is being blown way out of proportion. The players in the interviews about the situation are acting like victims. Possibly to gain sympathy. The media is probably mad because our owner called out the "all great" Manning. Now Im not saying JR isnt at fault i just think its being made a bigger deal than it is.

Go Panthers!

Someone that signs a contract allowing an NFL team to own the rights to your services exclusively. Yes, they are well paid, but they are owned, in that they can not go work anywhere else without permission.

This concept is sinking in....I see your mind wrapping around it.

Hey, ask Palmer what that feels like! Play or retire. Those are his two choices. Listen I don't have a problem with this. It's extremely important to secure your assests and that's exactly what player contracts do.
