10 reasons panthers should draft Newton...

.....

Which means it would be dumb to draft him unless we also pick up a veteran QB.

The Panthers need to pick up a veteran QB anyway. So the question is does this team look like 1) a Vet QB, Clausen and Cam Newton or 2) a Vet QB, Clausen, and Pike??

The more and more I read these board and think about the Panthers, I find it so interesting how for years they have pretty much ignored the QB position and now here we are at #1 and its "pass on Newton" because he shouldnt be drafted that high... he is a#5 or #10 not a #1, etc".

If Cam has the skills, talent, etc to be a franchise guy and the powers that be feel that way they have to take him. Who cares if he takes 3 years to develope. And if the powers that be feel he can be the guy, then they also shouldnt play around with trading down.

Let me just say that I was 100% against any discussion about drafting Cam Newton #1 overall from the first time it was ever mentioned. I still don't think a rational GM would do it.

But after watching some video from his workouts... holy cow, I did not realize how big this kid actually is. Right now he is all potential. He has a TON of potential. But the #1 overall pick should NEVER be used on someone who just has potential. The #1 pick needs to go to someone that is a sure thing. Right now, Nick Fairley is just about the only sure thing in this draft.

...other than Dwayne Harris, who will go 3rd or 4th round to some incredibly smart, lucky team... :D

I agree about Harris, guys a playmaker, but the argument about Newton being only potential is crap (and I don't mean to single you out on that others have used it as well). There is never a sure thing in the draft. Not at #1 or #201 anyone that get drafted is drafted because of how team view that potential. I could just as easily make the argument that Luck was all potential. Just because he played in a Pro Style O doesn't guarantee success (ask Clausen).

Along with his physical potential he showed a ton of intangibles on the field this year. From the way he just carried Auburn on his shoulder to the way he was a leader out there he willed that team to a National Championship. Anyone that will argue that Auburn would have won it all without Newton I will laugh in there face. And the way he handle all the adversity this year and still could not be stopped speaks volumes to how he will handle the adversity every QB faces in the NFL.

Obviously I agree he is no where near a sure thing but Fairley could be just as much of a bust (he reminds me a bit too much of Haynesworth).

It is widely agreed that Cam newton is less NFL ready than many other QBs because of the system he plays in

Who are these QBs that are more NFL ready? And can you tell me what in their skillset allows you to know ahead of time they will be a success on the next level? Keep in mind they played in those systems against "college competition".

Vet, Newton, Moore?

Not something I would like to see. I was never on the Moore bandwagon and would rather, again assuming they pick Cam,.... that it be a Vet, Cam, and Clausen.

At lease with Clausen there is still upside, he could still develop and possibly be a good QB should Cam not work out. If Cam did, and Clausen developed then he could become trade bait or something. I dont see any of that happening with Moore.

And you can make a pretty good argument that Luck played against lesser competition. Seriously, how many PAC 10 defenses actually strike fear in to anybody compared to SEC defenses?

    • I mean it's not even like this was his worst game of the season... I'm not done with him by any means but this feels more the norm for him than the exception:/
    • I'd give it a C mainly because of Brooks.  If we just didn't have a 2nd I'd argue B to B+ tbh. Brooks was a bad gamble, tho one that could still pay off long term. Yes XL only has 400 yards but... Look who is throwing him the ball. And I think he isn't a "true #1" but he's been able to consistently get open. Hands definitely need to be cleaned up.  But he should end the year with 500-600 yards. Like you said - Sanders looks great.  Get him a better QB / more time with a QB and I think he's gonna impress. We added a couple rotational players on D that have both made plays and show promise for the future from later rounds. So I'd say, Brooks really hurts this drafts grade. It'll be interesting to see how it progresses over the next 3 years. I've overall really liked Morgan's FA acquisitions, so...
    • Oh he would absolutely flourish. It’s the panthers way. It’s no different with coaches. Sometimes they reach their expiration date, go somewhere else, and find new success.  Similarly to Burns, how long to wait for the light to finally turn on?  Market forces will demand a salary that the panthers can not responsibly match. Sliding him to guard will fit his skill set better, but he has played LT for 3 years. He will receive offers from other teams wanting to pay him LT money.  At guard, he won’t start with what they have paid Hunt and Lewis. Center then?? Dunno. Maybe? He will become a backup by default once they draft their stud LT. I doubt Dan just stands pat. That’s not his MO.  So where does this put him? Can you match what other teams will offer for a backup LT/guard? Do you dish out franchise LT $ on a guy who still needs significant improvement in pass protection. This team will be DOA in the playoffs with the very first team who has a formidable speed rusher. What if he has hit his ceiling in pass protection already and they sign him long term? It’s a big gamble either way.
