10 reasons panthers should draft Newton...

Would Luck have been worth the risk? Would Barkley be worth the risk? Would Flacco or Aaron Rodgers have been worth the risk? At some point, you just have to stop being scared and go for it.

For the record I think it is definitely worth the risk but I need to see more from Newton before I feel like HE is worth taking this risk. I hope he throws at the combine and I will definitely be anxious to hear about his official workout.

And I do feel that messing up this pick will set us back multiple years bc it will take time to replace the player ee could have had. Bad decisions at the top of the draft are the reason we are where we are right now and we now have at least another year or two of mediocrity to look forward to before we will sniff the playoffs. Bad draft picks do that...but great picks (like if Newton works out) can put us back in the hunt in a year and would keep us there for the next decade. I hate to admit it but a great DT, WR, or CB wont do that.

Let me just say that I was 100% against any discussion about drafting Cam Newton #1 overall from the first time it was ever mentioned. I still don't think a rational GM would do it.

But after watching some video from his workouts... holy cow, I did not realize how big this kid actually is. Right now he is all potential. He has a TON of potential. But the #1 overall pick should NEVER be used on someone who just has potential. The #1 pick needs to go to someone that is a sure thing. Right now, Nick Fairley is just about the only sure thing in this draft.

...other than Dwayne Harris, who will go 3rd or 4th round to some incredibly smart, lucky team... :D

Personally I'm reserved spending our #1 on him until he does go to the combine. It's not just the throwing for me, but I'm eager to see how the interview process & evaluations go. From how he's carried himself so far, I expect good things but we'll see.

I wouldn't count on him throwing at the combine. He will be there and will interview but I would expect him to hold out until pro day where he has a little bit more control over it. From what i have heard Cam is willing to throw but is being advised not to.

Before everyone jumps on Cam over that this happens every single year. RARELY to the top three or four QB's throw at the combine. I don't think any of the "big 4" last year threw at the combine.

Name one #1 overall pick that wasn't drafted on potential.

Newton is all potential though. Almost nothing from his college play will translate to the NFL. I have a hard time trusting a QB that ran the ball just as many times as he threw it with the #1 pick. Not to mention he started a grand total of 1 year. Everyone is so giddy over the physical attributes (which while special for a QB, are not that special in the NFL) they ignore the giant question marks about his game that unfortunately can't be answered by tightly scripted workouts. I'm just a little apprehensive about a one year wonder that not only was in a gimmick offense, but was 50/50 QB/RB.

Here is the ultimate question:

1) If Newton works out we have a franchise QB for the next 10 years if it doesn't then we will be set back wt least 2-3 more years...so is this worth the risk?

Here's the real question:

If we draft Newton and he doesn't pan out, would we be in any worse shape than we are in now?

I don't think so. You don't find a franchise quarterback without taking a risk.

So, Luck, Fairley, Green, and Patterson have proven themselves in the NFL already? Do you actually have a point, or do you just like trolling for a good argument?

It is widely agreed that Cam newton is less NFL ready than many other QBs because of the system he plays in, but much more athletic which means he is being drafted on 100% NFL potential. You will have to teach him to be more of a pocket QB as well other aspects of the NFL game that he hasn't experienced yet.

Sam Bradford is less athletic but was considered more of an NFL QB. Luck is a perfect pocket QB so we already know he can handle that part.

The NFL may be way to much for Newton to transition to and he will not be ready to start in the NFL for a while.

Which means it would be dumb to draft him unless we also pick up a veteran QB.
